Work: Anderson & Low: Circus book

Patrick Burgoyne

Circus is a new book of work from photographers Anderson & Low. Shot in 2006 it features the circus performers of Blackpool Pleasure Beach shot both at work and off duty in the surroundings of the theme park

The book was designed by Paul Skerm, who left Pentagram last year to set up his own studio. Skerm met Edwin Low some years ago when, curiously, they were both extras on a Halifax commercial. He has since worked on several Anderson & Low projects. With Circus, he says, he “just wanted the imagery to speak for itself”. The inside of the book’s cover wrap is striped in reference to the big top, while the book’s title is rendered in a typeface similar to the lettering typically found on traditional circus posters.

Self-published by Anderson & Low’s own Lucky Panda Press imprint in an edition of 1000, the book, published on July 17, ties in with a forthcoming Photographers’ Gallery show for the duo.
