Work: FFL Paris: Wrangler print ads

Shot in New Jersey by artist Ryan McGinley, this slightly unnerving campaign for Wrangler has several jeans-wearing youngsters taking on the behavioural qualities of animals: be it part-submerged in murky waters, reclining in trees, or caught rabbit-like in a car’s headlights

Like McGinley’s own series of frolicking nudes, I Know Where the Summer Goes (a shot from which was used on the cover of the recent Sigur Rós album Með suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust) his shots for Wrangler, commissioned by agency FFL Paris, continue a predilection for nubile forms.

Indeed, McGinley has always seemed like the perfect choice for a fashion campaign – much of his art photography has certainly veered into the territory of capturing effortlessly pretty people being effortlessly pretty.

Here though, while contrived, the images hint at a darker and more intriguing aesthetic at play. But we can’t help thinking that the logo treatment is a little heavy-handed and couldn’t the typography have gone a little edgier too?

Very empty idea...

It's an absurd that this campaign have won the Cannes Grand Prix.
