Long term Radiohead collaborator Stanley Donwood is set to exhibit a series of paintings he completed with Dr. Tchock (better known as Thom Yorke). Held art Barcelona’s Iguapop Gallery, the show – bouyantly titled Dead Children Playing – is the first time the pair have exhibited artwork together.
Comprising work produced for Radiohead's albums Kid A, Amnesiac and Hail to the Thief, the paintings will be on show between 23 November until 16 December. The collection will include some variations on the snowscapes that prompted the sleeve artwork for Kid A and a range of the city paintings (where Donwood painted the layout of a particular metropolis and filled it with evocative words and phrases) one of which eventually became the cover for Hail to the Thief.
On his website, Donwood offers little explanation of the meanings or methods used to create the paintings. "There is no discussion of techniques or materials," he writes. "I have been more concerned with how the pictures came about in the first place. Besides, seeing as my techniques include screaming and the consimption of quantities of wine, while my materials include soot and gravel, I am reasonably certain that talking about the will not help anyone."
A full-colour 64 page book, Dead Children Playing: A Picture Book, will accompany the exhibition, published by Donwood's Slowly Downward Manufactory.
