Pop artist Sir Peter Blake has painted a portrait of the late and much-lamented John Peel to feature on the sleeve on a new compilation of the DJ's favourite tracks, John Peel-Right Time, Wrong Speed:1977-1987, the first of a trilogy celebrating Peel's career.

Warner Music creative consultant and art director, Scott Parker commissioned Blake. "The choice of Peter was made for various reasons, primarily because of his distinctive style but also because of his heritage of working with the greats of the music industry and the creative similarities in the paths of both men," says Parker. "I wanted a sleeve that was a celebration of John's life and work and not a tombstone. We presented Peter with a selection of photos which were approved by John's family and he chose the image to paint. From here it was a case of paying regular visits to his expansive and museum-like studio in Chiswick to see the progress," says Scott Parker.
