Record Sleeves Of The Week

Posted by Gavin Lucas, 26 September 2006, 10:54    Permalink    Comments (4)

We like a bit of music here at CR towers. And - but of course - the packaging it comes in... This week we’ve mostly been admiring the sleeves of the following albums:

Darkel album sleeve by H5

This is the rather splendid typographic cover of Darkel, a solo album by JB Dunckel, one half of musical duo Air. Label: Prototyp Recordings / EMI. Art direction: H5. Photography: Valérie Sonnier (inner cover photo) and Anthony Mccann (booklet photo).

Grizzly Bear album sleeve

Grizzly Bear album Yellow House on Warp. Art Direction: Grizzly Bear. Photography: Patryce Bak. Design by Ben Tousley

Zombie Nation album sleeve by Stevie P

Black, gold and white abstract hand-drawn typographic sleeve for Zombie Nation's Black Toys album on UKW Records. Art direction by Stevie P. Black Toys is released in November.

Bonnie Prince Billie - The Letting Go sleeve

Bonnie 'Prince' Billy's new album, The Letting Go comes in a gatefold CD sleeve that includes paintings by Becky Blair on the inside with photos attributed to The Admiral (and described as 'windward oahu pics' in the album sleeve notes) adorning the front and back of the sleeve. Out now on Domino.

---------------------------------------------------------------

We also like this single sleeve (below) for Vega4's You And Me single, art directed by Big Active. Set design: Lyndsay Milne. Photography: Annabel Elston. Label: Sony BMG.

If you've seen some lovely record sleeves recently - please feel free to tell us about them in the comment box of this post.

interesting that you should post this just as the new Beck album comes out. Its got an almost vacant space on the front and a pack of stickers, so fans can effectively design their own covers. The artists responsible for the stickers include some of today's best illustrators - including David Foldvari, Genevieve Gauckler, Michael Gillette - so if you're not a big fan of the Loser himself, it might still be worth getting...

You mean the new Beck album as exclusively revealed in the current issue of Creative Review, available in all good newsagents now???
