Build's Cutting Edge Workflow Management System

Build studio wall

There are numerous hi-tech workflow management systems available for the busy designer. Some studios have complex critical path analysis computer programmes, others use bespoke, intranet-based systems. Build has two black lines and some Post-it notes.

The system was Nicola Place's idea. It sits next to her (business and life) partner Michael's desk as an immediate, visual reminder of the projects going through the studio at any one time.

This is how it works:

Post–it notes above the black top line are –
FUTURE
--------------------------------------------------------
Post–it notes above the black bottom line are –
PENDING/COMING/THINK ABOUT
--------------------------------------------------------
Post–it notes below the black bottom line are –
IMMEDIATE!/NOW!

At present, for Build, the latter include a logo for Getty Images' Edit magazine, creating the identity for the Design Museum shop and preparing a talk for the St Bride's Institute.

Anyone else got some unusual/picturesque means of keeping track of their current projects?

Creative Review and Build are currently collaborating on a project documenting One Month In The Life Of A Graphic Designer to be published in our August issue, out 25 July

Probably picked up from Nicky's love for stickies in the first place ;) Post-It notes along a shelf above my desk running in priority of 'Really-need-to-do-this-now-ness' from left to right. Different pastel colours for different projects... Works really well until they start to fall off and chaos ensues...!

i use a similar method to build's, just that it's on my (paper) notebook, not on a wall. i use a "hold" tag for projects pending or waiting for feedback. then on the next pages i use detailed task notes.

i used the stickies once, but don't really trust the glue on them anymore :)
