I'm a bit of a sucker for a nice bit of screen-printing, which is why, of all the work on show at last week's D&AD New Blood student showcase, Nicholas Saunders' really caught my eye.

Saunders graduates this year from Nottingham Trent University. At New Blood, he exhibited a series of beautiful posters for a horror movie festival in Nottingham (one shown above, two more below).

"My love for screen-printing came with my love for rock posters and rock music - they kind of go hand in hand," says Saunders. "The poster goes against all digital formats of advertising which are so impersonal. I really got involved with screen-printing towards the end of my second year and did my dissertation on screen-printed rock posters," he continues.

"I did work experience at an eco-friendly screen printers based in Nottingham called I Dress Myself – they introduced me to the professional world of screen-printing and showed me that is was possible to be eco-consious yet still screen-print." Saunders designed this promotional pack of goodies for the company:

At New Blood, Saunders also showed a charming book based on Edward Lear's poems, printed using water-based inks on recycled paper:

"I would like to carry on in the direction I am going, although I still have alot to learn," says Saunders. "I have taught my-self how to screen-print, book-bind and brown-nose, so I feel I have most of the skills I need."

Creative Review will be featuring more graduate work in the coming months, including Build's pick of the best at New Blood in the August issue and a Student Showcase in September.

what is it with the build/CR relationship? are you all sleeping together? Is is a sex thing? is his opinion the only one you count on? is he on staff now? do you pay him? should you pay him? these and other questions need to be answered. maybe.

As explained previously in several posts, we are documenting Michael C Place/Build's work and life as a designer over the course of a month. One of the things Michael is doing during that month is selecting some favourites from New Blood which will be featured in the August issue of CR

Now, now gents - shouldn't we be using this space to discuss Nick's fine work?

I enjoyed a good chat with the man in question at his Nottingham Trent degree show, and the stuff looks even better in the flesh. It's got a real soul about it and the craft involved gives the work a tactile quality which I haven't seen on much recently.

Spread the word!

I have also seen some of Nick's fine work as I asked for his creative skills when I lived in Nottingham.

and yes it is even better when you can see it up close, the detail is second to none! I'm sure we will all be hearing of Nick in the not too distant future!
