Cinemagoers may be slightly confused by one of the films that will appear amongst the regular trailers in selected cinemas across London from today. Depicting a street scene in Borough Market, the beautifully shot film (shown above on YouTube) sees Jude Law walk through the market, pausing to buy some fish while poetically pondering life's mysteries. Yet at the end, instead of revealing that the film is a snippet of a forthcoming blockbuster starring Law, it has a more teasing tag, simply saying "Come, See, Experience, Real Time Movie, Borough Market, 30 Nov 07, 11.30am".
The film, directed by Jason Martin, is one of a series of artworks by Pawel Althamer, and forms part of the exhibition The World As A Stage, currently on show at Tate Modern. The piece aims to initially subvert viewers' expectations of films, and of trailers, by promoting a movie that doesn't exist (beyond the short film being shown, of course - keep awake at the back). Furthermore, if you head down to Borough on November 30, instead of simply being shown a film, you will see a reenactment of what you viewed at the cinema, and in turn be given the opportunity to become part of the action yourself (and potentially also have the chance to gawp at Jude Law, presumably). In doing so, everyday life will get muddled with Althamer's directed action, leaving viewers uncertain as to which is which.
Real Time Movie is the third project in a series of films featuring famous actors by Althamer, whose work explores the theatrical within the everyday, and aims to blur the lines between reality and fiction. The "trailer" will play at cinemas until November 29, the day before the reenactment.
