Currently on show at Gallery 275 in West London is an exhibition of new photography by Glen Erler. The series continues Erler's interest in that most awkward time of life, adolescence.

"These images have been taken over the past three years or so and are part of an ongoing study of the age group 13-18," he explains. "I grew up in Southern California but for the past 12 years I’ve lived in London. Each time I have the opportunity to return to visit my family and friends, I try and photograph various members of my family and since I started concentrating on this youth project, I’ve been photographing my cousins' kids for several years now. They still live in Valley Center, California, where I spent a good part of my youth as well. As they’ve grown, I sense the longing for change and see their bright eyes searching for what might be around the corner.

"They’re at the same age now that I was when I had to leave. I found that departure life-changing. I was around eleven or so when my parents decided to separate. I had spent all my early years in the same school with the same friends building a young life of learning and friendships and confidence. All of this seemed to exit, as did I, from life as I knew it. Two new schools within a few months along with the physical changes naturally occurring at that age still seem to be forming me and my personality to this day. I went from the involved to the observer. That period of my life seemed to inspire these images.

"These pictures are about hope and curiosity as much as they are about isolation. They can portray loneliness yet are moments of stillness and contemplation. They are spontaneous yet very thoughtful. They are also about the common thread that connects us as humans to the objects we see in our everyday life. We can gather the same emotion from an everyday object as we can from a human. They are about light and where it lands but also about its absence. I miss my family and maybe these images help to keep me a bit closer?"
