A spread from Monograph, CR's new, free, publication for subscribers, this month featuring the paper sculptures of Richard Sweeney. The format is 20 pages, A5. Each spread is divided by a sheet of tracing paper

In June 1995 Creative Review became the first magazine to launch a free monthly editorial CD-Rom. Back then, CD-Rom was an exciting new publishing medium. We were able to use it to give our subscribers access to commercials, music videos, sound toys and all kinds of other interactive content. It cost a small fortune but, while we were able to find sponsors to help support it, the disc became a very valuable means of encouraging people to subscribe to the magazine. Now, of course, the kind of content our CD provided is ubiquitous. YouTube has a thousand times more content than all of our CDs put together and it’s completely free. What is less easy to find is beautifully produced printed content. Which is why we have decided to launch Monograph, a 20-page A5 booklet. Every month, subscribers will receive this new publication absolutely free.

Each month it will feature a different project or collection of creative work. The first issue, which went out with September's CR, featured highlights from the poster collection of Spin creative director, Tony Brook (cover and spreads shown below).

For the October issue, out this week, we are featuring the beautiful paper sculptures of Richard Sweeney:

Of his work, Sweeney says: "My working process is essentially experimental, I tend to let the material dictate the forms rather than forcing it to do something. Working in this manner with paper allows for the generation of many ideas in a short space of time, which can be developed into quite elaborate forms. Once the models are fully refined, I often photograph them against a plain, white backdrop. This has the effect of removing any sense of scale, so there is an ambiguity about the imagery – these could be perceived as colossal architectural structures, or as minuscule electron micro-graphs. Using all white also places full emphasis on the forms and shapes of the pieces – light and shadow reveals their tactile surfaces. The sculptures and the photography are both important in their own right, and I believe that the photograph should reveal as much information about the three dimensionality of the piece as possible."

Sweeney has just completed his course in Three Dimensional Design at the Manchester Metropolitan University but is already taking on a wide array of commissions. Monograph this month features sketches, roughs and final work for an annual report for Strategic Hotels through Chicago design studio Samata Mason (cover and spread, below).

In future, we particularly want to feature personal projects from photographers – the kind of explorations of new techniques and new ideas that all photographers hold dear but are frustrated by not being able to put before a wider audience. But we are also looking for work or collections of work from all areas of our readership to publish in future editions of Monograph. If you have something that you think we would be interested in, please email me at the usual address. I hope that you enjoy Monograph – we see it as a thank you to everyone who subscribes to the magazine. We also hope that it will persuade some of you who currently buy the magazine on the newsstand to subscribe instead.

As a special incentive, today, 20 September, for 24 hours only, we are offering 40% off a subscription to Creative Review. The discount is now live, please go here to subscribe.

You have 24 hours from now (10.30 GMT). Clock's ticking...

Curses, I only signed up but a fortnight ago. What awfully poor timing!

I'm wondering if anyone is willing to give up their copy of Monograph from September's edition. I'm big on print design over any other. Failing that, any method by which I can obtain a copy direct from CR?
