Last year Tony Chambers went from creative director to editor-in-chief at Wallpaper*, but now art director Simon Esterson's gone one better and is the new co-proprietor of design magazine Eye, after a decision by Haymarket to release the magazine to its editor, John L Walters.

Eye will now be managed through new company Eye Magazine Ltd, established by Walters, Esterson and Hannah Tyson (business director at Esterson Associates and now managing director of Eye), and will be run out of offices adjacent to Esterson's studio in Hoxton.

In a phone call to CR, Walters was understandably reluctant to go into any detail of what deal lies behind Haymarket's use of the term "released", so we don't know if any money changed hands. The Spring issue (cover shown above), out this week, is the first published by the new company.

It would be nice if the subscription rates came down as a result although I fear they will actually increase.

my 5 cent - they should do books instead. As a magazine it's too expensive and tricky to find, as a book it would reach a wider audience.

Incidentally is Grafik turning into Graphis these days or wha?

And Computer Arts is looking more like a quality design mag - straaange.

grafik hasnt a clue what it is, why it is or who its for. it seems to change direction every 6 months and has the aura of trying to be all cool and hip, but ending up feeling like a clique of tedious and overally earnest 32 year olds (with a mullets and stupid t shirts) dancing badly in a warehouse party full of teenagers. actually, that is what 95% of graphic designers are like so maybe its hitting its target market quite well.

eye is over-priced and under-loved and needs to do something quick to right the ship. it'll be interesting to see what they do.

Although I think Rich is perhaps tarring all designers with the same Shoreditch-hipster-brush, I must agree with him that Grafik is somewhat losing its way. Lots of pretty design-fashion, yes; but not much more for your £8.

Best of luck to John and Simon at Eye. Just received this morning the latest issue, looks great ad lots of interesting to read and look at, it is really my favourite publication, but it is expensive. Maybe they should try a blitz of the industry with a lower price and scoop up the goodwill... I could knock them out a flyer if they need it...

Grafik is very poor at the moment, wish I hadn't renewed my sub...

The latest issue of Eye is a great read, just as every issue I've ever picked up has been. A periodical in magazine form. No complaints about the shelf price myself, although a slightly lower subscription price would tempt me to sign up rather than be an occasional reader.

I must agree that Eye has always seemed a bit unaccessible in terms of both price and availability, so hopefully the new team in place will take a look at this. As for Grafik, I'm a huge fan.

Good news! Best magazine alongside Adbusters, though I take on board people's critique of the price and it's always good for things to be cheap, Eye is beautifully produced and intellectually stimulating (the last bit being what's missing from nearly all other design publications), and I will gladly pay the price of a book for that 4 times a year.
