Barack Obama poster by Shepard Fairey, nominated for the Brit Insurance Design Awards 2009 in the Graphic Design category by CR's Patrick Burgoyne
The nominations for the awkwardly titled Brit Insurance Design Awards 2009 have been announced, ahead of an exhibition that will be held at the Design Museum in London from February next year. As with last year's awards, the inclusion of most aspects of design (including architecture, fashion, furniture, graphic design, interactive, product and transport) makes for an eclectic, but interesting, list.

Joachim Sauter, Art + Com, Kinetic Sculpture for the BMW Museum, nominated in the Interactive category by Andy Cameron
Each of the nominees were put forward by leading designers and design commentators, including our very own Patrick Burgoyne. The nominees were asked to pick up to three projects from the last 12 months that "reflect issues raised by one or more of the concerns of the current debate on design". They were also asked to "consider the responsiveness of the design to the social, cultural and economic landscape as well as environmental issues, or the degree to which the project has fulfilled the expectations of users and clients". The list demonstrates the vitality of the design industry today, although curiously it omits any website design, which might be expected to have its own category. Otherwise we are still digesting the nominations but will blog more on them around the time of the exhibition.

I like the Appeel - Wall of Stickers and the idea of interactive art & design as an award category. It is something I would love to have the budget and space to realise and bring ideas to life on a grand scale with interactive aspects to involve the audience!

they all look really impressive in their own ways. Going to be tough to get a winner.
