Monkey Returns for the Olympics on the BBC

With animation from Jamie Hewlett and music by Damon Albarn, BBC Sport's new campaign for their Olympics coverage is based upon the traditional Chinese folklore tale, Journey to the West by Wu Cheng'en – probably more familiar to UK viewers through its TV incarnation, Monkey Magic!, itself an English language version of the 1970s Japanese show, Saiyūki. In the BBC's trailer, Monkey and the inimitable Pigsy make their way on a Journey to the East, ultimately to the bird's nest-like National Stadium in Beijing.
The lavish two-minute trailer apparently took twelve weeks to complete, using the team of four senior key animators and five animation assistants, and the track features traditional Chinese instruments (such as the Pipa, Ur Hu and Zheng) and etheral vocals from singer Jia Ruhan.

My friend works at Red Bee, who are doing the olympic's moving image for the BBC, and he showed it to me in hi-res a couple of weeks ago.
It's awesome. Not sure how well it represents the olympic tho...

Dear CR,
I tried to make a very valid point over the weekend about the poor quality of both this and the BBC's imagination, or lack of, but so far it hasn't been posted. I do hope my favourite blog isn't censoring comments? The BBC didn't have to look far for this shoddy piece of animation did they - they are Monkey: Journey To The West ads all over the tube.
Regards
Nick

We had a huge amount of spam over the weekend which all had to be sorted manually. Most likely your comment was inadvertently caught up and deleted. Apologies for that.

through the clip you can see little showcases of some of the events that take place in the olympics.
such as the pig hurdling over some stumps and hammer-throwing that bug eyed monster as well as the monkey throwing his stick like a javelin and the human guy doing an elaborate dive into the water, it implements the olympics into a cool, adventure-style montage.

Thanks for adding my comments. To me this looks like the awful animation used by the Planet Of The Apes cartoon series when I was a kid. Very basic stuff. Zombie Flesh Eaters, Jamie Hewlett's 'animation' studio also has possibly the worst website I've seen. No info, showreel, nothing except zombies. The BBC Sport and Aardman animation Euro 2008 titles where far far superior. A missed opportunity from a pair who are vastly overrated.

Some people just don't see great animation when it hits them in the face.
jamies work is well respected around the world and loved. How much other british animation is in the same league
