CS Shanghai 2: The Slaughterhouse

Across the road from the Creative Social Shanghai event, where I'm blogging from this week, is a 1930s abattoir which has just been converted into a shopping and entertainment complex. Inside, now that the blood and gore has been washed away, it's spectacular...
There's an American Apparel store, a shop selling Macs and a fancy wine bar on the ground floor, with a restaurant on the third floor. More space will be taken up by design studios, ad agencies etc
The walkways inside are where the animals were led up to their grisly end

All over the world, buildings like this with utilitarian pasts are being redeveloped, often to be used by design studios, ad agencies or other creative companies, but what will be the architectural legacy of our generation? Old Billingsgate market and old Covent Garden market in London have been reinvented as entertainment venues - new Covent Garden and new Billingsgate are both featureless tin sheds that will have fallen down in a hundred years. So what will we leave behind for future generations? Where will the studios, artists and agencies a hundred years from now make their homes?

One can make an argument that the purpose of the building has remained the same, just one sort of meat replacing another.
