Ford's Search For The Now

Ford Fiesta This Is Now ad, Agency: Ogilvy London, Creatives: Dom Sweeney, John Crozier, Production company: BlinkINK, Director: Noah Harris, Post-production: Framestore
The concept behind this ad for the new Ford Fiesta initially appears fairly straightforward. It opens with individual television screens appearing within a suburban setting, before coming together to form the rough shape of a car. The TVs then 'drive' through the city streets before morphing into the actual car at the end of the spot. So far, so car ad. What makes the commercial unusual, however, is what the television screens contain, and the way in which this content was created...
By Kristofer Strom
The spot was directed by Noah Harris, yet contains contributions from over 20 other young designers, filmmakers and artists, who each created short pieces of moving image content. Harris, who steered the direction of the films throughout, then worked with the post team at Framestore to create a fluid 30-second piece to show on the screens. Shown here is a selection of the original films that were made by for the ad.

The aim was to capture a sense of the 'now', with all the contributors chosen for their cutting edge credentials. "The idea came about through the design of the Ford Fiesta, which was influenced by the zeitgeist," explains Harris. "The whole concept of the zeitgeist means you can’t really just sit down and make all the stuff yourself – it was key to me to get many others involved."

"There’s a massive spirit of collaboration in the design world now, so it’s how I like to work," continues Harris. "Advertising can be quite a singular thing, but there’s no reason why it has to be."

If this is so 'now' wouldn't the TV's be flat screen LSD or Plasma rather than the old black boxes we all used to have in the corners of our living rooms 10 years ago?

It was probably an aesthetic choice... and the style in which the ad is done, the tv's are almost like building blocks, in an abstract sense combining together to make up the car/content - I don't think flat screens would have looked half as good, and there's nothing wrong with combining old and new to make "new new"...postmodernism all the rage. ( i think its that ? can't quite remember the term.. ? )

I actually looked at every clip, they were interesting and got me thinking about animation techniques... Which leads me on the the question... Would it be cheeky to ask if there could be more info on how these clips were done? i.e. the type of animation, the apps used to create them etc.
