Matt Dent's UK coins are among the graphic design nominations at D&AD

The nominations for the 2009 D&AD Awards have just been announced. After last year's furore, will graphic design figure this time?

The good news for graphic design is that there are 13 nominations this year as opposed to two last year (112 entries are in-book). Traditionally graphic design has a high conversion rate from nominations into pencils so it looks as though there should be a healthy number of graphic design awards this year.

If there are, it will be the result of a lot of hard work behind the scenes. After last year, D&AD worked hard to engage with graphic designers and encourage entries, reducing the price and specifically targeting certain studios. It looks to have worked - Build, for example, has a project in the book this year and I can't remember them even having entered before (Michael, correct me if I'm wrong).

Elsewhere, Environmental Design and TV & Cinema Crafts lead the nominations, with 14 from each jury. On the ad side, mobile has nine nominations as the field finally starts to turn up some interesting work. There are only five nominations in online advertising, but 19 in press and poster (plus the 14 in commercials) denoting something of a traditional fightback. Also, music videos has an encouraging 11 nominations.

It's hard to spot too many Black Pencil candidates though - maybe Orange Ballonacy (a Best in Book in the CR Annual) or perhaps D&AD will follow Cannes and award Turner Duckworth's Coke rebrand the major prize?

We'll put up more images, links and analysis on this later but in the meantime, the full details are below.

And here are all the in-books for graphic design (sorry for the eye-straining size but it's the best way to get the information up quickly)

Am I the only one who found the Balloonacy thing really really annoying? I'm sure it was fun for the people taking part, but for people actually visiting the websites that hosted it, it was just a glorified pop-up.

Yeah I was very unbothered by balloonacy too. Personally...

Just the 2 nominations in the packaging field?

No, Daniel, you're not. For me, it was an exercise in Look What We Can Do rather than anything of real value. Certainly didn't make the bewildering tarrif system any clearer.

But maybe the fact I found it so dull so quickly meant I didn't experience the full effect. At the time I was also an Orange customer, and therefore predisposed to hate it.

For me, the proliferation of different awards shows is having a detrimental effect on established and more trusted 'brands' such as D&AD. The sneaky suspicion that awards are just a money making exercise is making me cynical I guess. I think it's time D&AD started to shout more about their not for profit status to differentiate themselves from the masses.

Maybe the next call for entries will be the time to do it.

In an era when we have sites like fffound which give us instant, word-of-mouth recognition to the best design in the world, I can not see the long term usefulness of D&AD awards, though I do still believe in the organisation.

My peers have always suggested the awards are riddled by nepotism, based on what actually wins. Sour grapes? Though looking through the previous years winners work, it doesn't reflect the best of what I know was out there. That is a subjective view point but I do believe the awards have a uphill struggle to garner the interest of new & emerging designers.

I think the D&AD awards are a great way for the design industry to showcase the years best work.

Same old list, same old inner circle of friends being nominated. Nothings changed - boring rip-off ad agency work and fashionable graphic design.

Pat on the back for anyone? nah we'll just make you a winner instead.

Troika - well deserved.
