Sid's Faces

Every week Sid creates a new character for his role as host of the Birmingham nightclub DV8. Student photographer Nat Poole has captured some of them for a new exhibition

"I was attracted to Sid because he stood out from the usual drag queens," says Poole who is studying on the photography degree course at the University of Wolverhampton. "Instead of impersonating a woman like most drag queens, Sid has an unconventional style, one that seems in a sense, genderless. This notion of portraying one's self in many forms, none of which are predominantly male or female, is where he perfectly linked to my interests, which are to do with looking at identity and representation."

Poole contacted Sid via his MySpace page which, she says, she has found useful in contacting other subjects for her work in the past. "It allows you to approach many people and from their profile pages you can gauge if it's something they will or won't be interested in," she says. "Sid was very welcoming – we met weekly whilst he was hosting the night club to capture his chosen image for that particular night. I made a point of not posing him, so that it was more about him and his personalities."

The exhibition is at The Light House Gallery, Lock Works in Wolverhampton until the 15th of May 2009
