Detail from a Great Charity Poster by Fermín Garbayo, from Pioneers of Spanish Graphic Design

For decades, Franco kept a lid on Spanish design but a new book, Pioneers of Spanish Graphic Design, aims to shed light on some of the country's most important practitioners. David Crowley, deputy head of design history at the Royal College of Art, takes a look at it...

Read Crowley's review of Pioneers of Spanish Graphic Design from our July issue, here.

The book is published by Mark Batty Publisher; $58.

I love it - its basic with broad strokes and distinct shadows but its really effective.

That book is crap, it's all fifties camp put together with no taste at all. Spain in the fifties was forgettable to say the least. Contemporary Spanish design is much better than the other three quarters of the twentieth century.

As Spaniard I am tired that every time Spain is portrayed in Anglo-Saxon media, Spain is being shown as the ridiculous Hemingway fantasy of blood, passion, mediterranean crap and why not, nonsense south american pastiche al mixed together. If I see another reference to bulls, passion, tradition vs modernity (which is like saying, look how funny those third world peasants look doing their best to look like us) or Dalí I think I am going to the beach to kick some english asses back to fish and chips.

I love the bold design and loose brushwork of the illustration. What a powerful piece of work. I like to paint in a much more controlled fashion you can see the bull picture I painted a few years ago now at http://www.alisonjacobs.com/2006/bullock1b.html

This is a powerful image for the Corrida but for Spaniards they are probably tired of this ´cliched´ image of Spain, but nonetheless there is no denying that bull fighting still goes on and all the Spanish still love bull fighting as much as when this poster was first designed. I have been illustrating and interpreting poems of Federico Garcia Lorca and it is extremely difficult to avoid the cliches of Spain as their culture and language is very difficult to decipher.
