Type designer Seb Lester has been taking a break, of late, from producing typefaces to work on a series of playful posters and prints – all of which showcase his interest in typographic illustration. A show of these prints (Lester's first solo exhibition) opens at Newcastle's Electrik Sheep Gallery this week...
"Someone who loves cooking doesn't just want to make fish and chips I guess," says Lester of his break from creating whole typefaces. "I have extremely broad taste in letterforms," he continues. "In some respects this show is my reaction to having designed corporate typefaces so much for so long, which are inherently conservative in nature. I love designing robustly modern industrial type, but I also want to indulge my passion for other more expressive and sensual lettering styles. That's really what this show is all about."
Here are a few prints that will feature in the show:
The exhibition runs until August 29 at Electrik Sheep Gallery, 22 Pink Lane, Newcastle NE1 5DW

Lovely work, I really like the feel of "Tits". Ok, rephrase. I like the yesteryear style of the typeface of tits although they are all great.

This is beyond just 'very nice', it's brilliant and inspired. Completely eclectic in style, I get the impression that there's nothing this man couldn't do in the realm of illustrative type if he put his mind to it. I'm a fan.

You professional type designers make me so jealous... it's not enough you create awesome, gorgeous typefaces that help define contemporary graphic design, now you go on and do stuff like this! Hmmmph.

Thanks again. Just to say the opening night was packed out which was very surprising and pleasing. Lots of sales. Thanks to anyone reading who came along, especially those who bought a print. The show runs until the 28th August.

I am a hardcore lover of good Typography, if I had the time I would be making fonts of my own but just cant find the time and would not want to do half a job like these fonts that don't have any symbols.

I'm a beginner when it comes to the art of typography (recent grad you see) & when you see pieces like this it inspires you to do great things with your pencil and mouse, learn all you can & try and amount to what Seb has done. Thanks Seb for the visual treat. My eyes salute you.
