An eye on Nobrow...

Earlier this year we posted a film in the CRTV section of our website that takes a look inside Nobrow - the printing studio and small press in Shoreditch set up by Sam Arthur and Alex Spiro earlier in the year. Since then their work has appeared here on the blog in a couple of posts entitled Nice Publications - and now a few of their recently published projects warrant a post all of their own...

First up is the second edition of Nobrow, entitled, quite simply, Nobrow 2 which features work on a theme of "The Jungle" by a host of illustrators...

Next up is People I've Never Met & Conversations I've Never Had (cover shown above) - a 36 page, hardback monograph by illustrator Nick White whose work makes use of imagery found in magazines and other found material. The book is full of portraits of fictitious characters and imagined conversations... here is a selection of spreads:

Nick White, along with Peepshow artists Andrew Rae, Spencer Wilson and Luke Best will be doing some live drawing at the regular Heavy Pencil event this Sunday at Catch, 22 Kingsland Road. White will also be providing some live musical sounds - as will Andrew Rae's band, The Marmosets. Here's the flyer (designed by Andrew Rae):

OK, back to the Nobrow books... Blex Bolex (who did the cover of Nobrow 2) book Abecederia has been published in German (by Büchergilde Gutenberg, Frankfurt, 2007) and French (Les Requins Marteaux, Albi, 2008) and now, thanks to Nobrow, there is an English version. The illustrated book follows the story of brothers Léon and Bernard Blanchet who, following a bank heist, seek refuge from the police in a most bizarre settlement which is run by the peculiar Doctor Praxis. The illustration on each page reveals a letter of the alphabet...

Now then, sharp eyed regular readers may recognise the style of artist McBess - whose book Malevolent Melody is the very latest publication from Nobrow. We featured the video to the self-penned track entitled Wood by McBess (who's a musician, an illustrator and animator) back in May this year (click here to read that post / watch the video). Malevolent Melody is McBess' first solo comic book and recounts his journey through forgotten melodies to find the ultimate source of his character's amnesia... The book also acts as the packaging for a 7" vinyl record featuring music written and performed by McBess' own band, The Dead Pirates...
