Euro 2012 logo launched

Michel Platini likes it – the official logo, identity and slogan for football's 2012 European championships have been unveiled...

And, in comparison to the stuff usually dreamed up for these events, the logo's not half bad. Well, at least it's, er, interesting.

Designed by Portuguese group Brandia Central, it features two flowers symbolising the joint host nations Poland and Ukraine who will, as the official slogan has it, be "Creating History Together" at the tournament. Platini, who is Uefa president, said at the launch (the whole painful event is captured here) "The symbolism of a plant that grows is fully in line with the aspirations of the two host countries, and I am sure that we will be creating history together with the staging of the Uefa European Football Championship in central and east Europe for the first time."

According to Uefa the logo symbolises "the emotion and passion of the competition, while the stem denotes the structural aspect of the competition, UEFA and European football. Nature has inspired other features of the visual identity, with woodland green, sun yellow, aqua blue, sky blue and blackberry purple being the crucial tones of the palette of colours to figure in official tournament branding."

A film here attempts to justify the cost involved explain the thinking behind the symbol.

I'm not sure if i fully understand the concept or the execution. It's very confusing. I don't want to sound derogatory but it has connotations of 'disney', especially in other areas of the branding. The explanation of the concept seems confused, trying to explain the symbolism in a forced manner. However, it would be good to see and hear more.

If the blue flower was green I'd say the only symbolic reference this image has is of Mario... (feat. Mario, red, Mushroom and Luigi, green) or is that just me?

I doubt it's only reference would be of a nintendo character

Bit complicated for my liking...not too sure why the R and O are joined together like that either...

Its average at best.

This logo, as many others, has a rational that explains it. I'm sure nobody explained Patrick what that rational is in this situation, because not being an expert in the matter, I learned more about the logo and visual identity just by viewing the film. For example the design was clearly inspired by Wycinanki, which is an art form of paper cutting dated from the mid 19th century. Or we can talk about the values reflected in the design patterns that you can also see in the film.

Patrick seems to dominate the art form of "superficial reviewing", a very popular hobby for people who don't investigate properly or just don't care.

At least Rob here is making an honest effort...

I wish it was more graphic, simpler and flat. Why does everyone and their mothers want a 3D logo these days, and design studios are bending over backwards to give them that.

I'll take that as a compliment joao ... I think ;)

As there is no reference to the cost of the project in the post, I'm curious if the malicious reference to "justify(ing) the cost involved" is really an issue or just Mr. Burgoyne being (deleted by moderator)

To me this looks like a power-up from Mario Brothers, or a Scottish thistle drawn after 3 tabs of acid. The type looks nice though...

It just looks like a plant that has been flattened by a football to me...

I posted a comment yesterday, but apparently I've been censored.
Let me try again.
As there is no reference to the cost of the project in the post, I wonder if the reference to the "Justify(ing) of the cost involved" is really an issue or is it just Mr. Burgoyne doing some more "superficial reviewing"...

So, when you're all finished slagging off a beautiful, simple piece of work that doesn't
need your negative comments, why don't you offer up your genius solution??

The logo is easy on the eye, it's organic and what it will do, and mark my words, it will
be more and more accepted the more it is seen.

Congratulations to those who spent the time and energy in creating this gem.

I agree with Tomi A flat more graphic approach would have more impact, it looks like someone has gone OTT with the bevel tool.

I'd love to see it designed by this persons work I stumbled across a while back:
http://www.sanna-annukka.com/home/
The 3D approach just cancels out the organic nature of the logo.

Saying that I do like the floral pattern within the football I understand the 2 leaves represent both nations but I'd like to see what just the football with the floral pattern would look like.

The football within a flower within a flower is overkill.

I like it because it make me laugh. It's another European Championships logo, much like all the others. I'm sure the logo is picked by the same people every year - so there is not very much anyone can do about it - We're stuck with a logo chosen by accountants. Thats the only problem with it. but at least they're consistent.

It is a more than a bit camp – thought football was a man's game.

Yet more design with its man parts under the thumb of post-feminism. Never mind the carbon footprint, the air must be getting pumped full of oestrogens. Maybe they are attempting to soften the strereotype of the hard East. But still.

Can picture it now, the players shaking hands with the limpest of wrists. Or communal showers after matches lol! And no... this isn't a fantasy of mine – its the living nightmare of where design is going. Time for us creatives to sprout some hair!

What have tulips (the flower things look like tulips) got to do with Poland or the Ukraine? I'm also fed up with clip art people with their arms up in the air when anything to do with physical activity is involved. Am I being too harsh?

From most of the comments here, I must be in the minority who appreciate this design. It certainly could do with less "bevel" and 3D effect, but overall I think it's very artistic and looks natural.

It also represents Poland, Ukraine and football, which are the main themes that need to be represented in the logo, quite clearly.

And of course, it's way better than the London 2012 Olympics which everyone seems to have accepted.

Guys, your comments are simple "superficial reviewing"! Or unwisdom... Or envy...
Like Anibe says, how about the London 2012 Olympics logo????
That's one of the worst logos I've seen on tv!! A real problem.

About the Euro 2012 logo... Fantastic Work! Love it!
Like the video show's, I'm sure the implementation will be successful.

Jolt, have you looked at your portfolio??????

Cheers!

I like it. I think it must be tricky designing a logo for a tournament spread over 2 countries but I think this is a successful and accesible solution. I also like the way the R flows into the O echoing the form of the logo. Following on from what João Dias said about wycinanki, I saw a great exhibition of this polish paper cutting at the Horniman Museum in Forest Hill last year. Understanding this as an inspiration definitely helps appreciate the logo.
