Pentagram's Domenic Lippa has unveiled a new identity and promotional material for D&AD's 2009 Student Awards. The new work pixellates the familiar yellow pencil and uses elements of this effect across a new website and array of printed materials – including posters and briefing postcards – reflecting the organisation's decision to take the contents of the Annual online...

This isn't new, is it (I mean, in the last few days)?

@Tim
It would seem so - Pentagram emailed us about it yesterday

Very Nice! Or is this just a low-res version of the actual art??

Brilliant work. I really love this stuff.

It seems this is another cyclic re-invention of the period influenced by the radical advances of computer technology in the 80s. I for one am all for it! I've always loved visuals that use the '72' with the '300'. Not so sure about the peach colour on top of the yellow though. Website header works really well.

i think this is really nice, but wouldnt it be better for students to do this work, get them some real experience in the real world of real briefs and real deadlines and real money, rather than someone so established, who to be fair, probably doesnt need the exposure and money.

i like it. its a nice visual language

I agree with Mark - Jellyhaus, great work! although i have to say i prefer the yellow/pink&black combo to the web banner purples & blues

Genius! love the use of the curve in pixels to allow for the longer item 'Student Annual Online' on http://sa09.dandad.org/studentawards09/

dadif - I totally understand where you are coming from, I think this would be great for a bunch of students to do for the experience but not necessarily for the money. However I think it would be slightly odd that students would be designing the identity for D&AD and competing in the design competitions at the same time. I think its probably best that these kind of things are left to the designers and design companies that we all know and respect.

Really like this, just wondering if a billboard campaign would work well, viewed from a distance the shape is clear, and close up a pixel blend? could look cool

@ash
moneys not such a bad thing either for broke students.
but does designing the identity for a competition imply any oddness on that designer then entering the competition? i dont think so.. ive never heard of that anyway, so why impose that on students?
alternatively you could just give the project to a different college every year, and then they wouldnt be allowed to enter that year?

Thanks for all the nice comments about the new identity for the 2009 D&AD Student Awards.
It is new for this year and we are all really proud of Pentagram's work.
As to your suggestions about giving the work to students, I would really love to be able to do things like that, however, as I am sure Dominic can testify this project becomes a lot larger then it first appears and we rely on the generosity of everyone we work with to come up with such amazing work with such limited resources. This could be tricky for students just getting started to have to deliver so much to such tight deadlines.
Also, most importantly we want them all focused on entering so that we can put their work in front of all of you at judging to let you have first pick of the very best. It might be unfair to stop a college from entering because they have come up with the design for that year's student awards.

On the contrary Fergal, I would say that as a student schedules were tighter and workloads were higher than actually being a real designer (depending, of course, on your levels of motivation).
It could also be open to students who have graduated that previous year, give them a chance to make a name for themselves instead of hoping between design companies every month. Although this could turn it into an unwanted competition and more work for you guys!!!
my 2c's anyhow.
Like the work though, good job (again) Pentagram.

The online option is definitely the way forward in environmental terms but takes away that most excellent of visual resources, the d&ad annual.
In past years the student annual has been a real collectors item, an item of pride for those students who might not have won one of the big awards, but still got their work in.
That said last year's annual was a design travesty and I was absolutely gutted when it dropped through my letterbox. It looked more like a school's annual report than a showcase of the UK's best creative graduates.
Thought I'd just get that off my chest.
Nice design Penty by the way.
