Life in Technicolour by Coldplay, directed by Dougal Wilson, production company: Colonel Blimp
Dougal Wilson's video for Coldplay's new single, Life in Technicolour, sees the band reinvented as puppets, who provide a musical interlude to a Punch and Judy show at a local village fête.
The video sees the Punch and Judy theatre slowly transformed (with some help from a suitably 'tached puppet roadie) into a stage fit for a rock band, including lights and piles of miniature amps. "Coldplay were on their big tour so they couldn't really be in the video," says Wilson. "They suggested they could be puppets instead. There's been a few videos with puppets so I tried to think of a puppet genre which hadn't really been used yet. I remembered Punch and Judy. I thought it would be interesting to attempt to recreate the spectacle of a stadium gig with everything shrunk to this size."
Sketches from Wilson's treatment for the video are shown below.

i really thought i'd hate this, but saw it this morning eating my breakfast (porridge incidentally, thanks for asking) and for some reason - i think at the point where a dad filming mouths 'f**king hell' - it got under my skin.
the lyrics tho.... dear oh dear... i assume it was mr eno who 'suggested' they keep it to an instrumental on the album proper.

this kind of reminds me of the gorilizas, i guess its a valid form of creative expression, to re-create yourselves as animations.

It's a nice little idea, well-executed and not a little sinister. I do think Beck had the puppet-reinvention gimmick sewn up a long time before but this works a lot better than I predicted it to.

Why use the idea of Punch & Judy, but not Punch & Judy style hand puppets?

I think that it's great! I don't know if it's meant as a self-parody of their 'overblown stadium anthemic pop' image, but the crew puppets are just ace!

i love the sort of project when you can see the tiny details that help you to see how much effort has been put in. like the tiny crew mans tiny builders butt. nice work. its original and reminds me of a peter gabriel esque video / game / toy...!!

I would agree with Fran that this has been done before, and mush better in my opinion, by BECK a while ago...

Agree with the other comments...
Beck did this. Better.

One thing that didn't match the real show - The Chris Martin puppet doesn't spend enough time rolling around on the stage, and generally didn't fall over a lot. Come to think of it, Chris Martin was a lot like a puppet the night we saw them!!
Brilliant... put a smile on my face

A dull video for a dull song.

like the song but was puzzled to find its only an instrumental on the album. If its a ploy to get me to buy the ep then its not gonna work!

I dont really care what the others say, they must be stupid, the video is fantsatic and very well put together and the song is simply the best.though i must add i would be disappointed if the album version was different

This is an amazing video, it really caught me by surprise.
There's absolutely no point in commenting on the video if you don't even like the music, trolling is for trolls.
I love the song, its simple and short and fits very well for the video.
Most coldplay music videos are trying to be artsy and aern't particularly entertaining in my opinion, but this one stands out since it's more about the music video than it is about trying to wrap a video around a song's lyrics.
Complaining that puppets are a used genre is totally rediculous, I half expected someone to say Weezer's Keep Fishing had a better use of puppets.....

excellent, thanks for sharing..

I actually found that quite entertaining, I like the use of puppetry in this. Thanks for sharing

Thought this would me my idea of a nightmere visually, but all things considering this has turned out quite beautifully crafted.
The imagery is potentent and provoking, nothing like a perceptual 180!
