CR's February cover, illustrated by Letman

The February issue of Creative Review is out on Wednesday 21 January, with features on Luke Hayman, Letman, Indian advertising, The Guardian's new home, The Elms Lesters Painting Rooms and more...

Our Work section features first sight of the logo for Condé Nast's forthcoming Love magazine, Dougal Wilson's puppet-tastic video for Coldplay and Spin's identity for Argentina's PROA gallery

Features include an interview with Pentagram's Luke Hayman in which he reveals the secret of his success - CR, of course (ahem)

A profile of Job Wouters, aka Letman, hand-lettering artist extraordinaire and brother of our former Creative Future, Roel. Job also designed our cover this month, which carries on our theme of basing the design around a listing of that month's content. Also, our guest typeface this issue (as seen here) is Dessau Pro Stenzil Variant by Gábor Kóthay, distributed by Fountain

How The Guardian's editorial design has grown, almost accidentally, into an all-encompassing visual language for the paper, which now includes signage at its new home (by Cartlidge Levene)

A look at why The Elms Lesters Painting Rooms, shunned by the mainstream gallery world, has given street art a home

And an examination of the role that advertising can play in ensuring that India doesn't repeat the mistakes of the west in the face of growing consumerism

Plus, in Crit, we have all the usual discussion and comment including a look at advertising's love of pain

And the all-important findings of our research into studio snacking and listening habits

Plus, subscribers will notice a change to Monograph this month. We are now using this rather beautiful Stephen Sultry Grey cover stock

Inside this month we feature Paul Belford's collection of vintage Bollywood posters

And here's the back cover with a key to the various pens that Letman used to design the front

It's out on Wednesday 21 January. Enjoy.

My favourite bit of this month's issue is the news item about Mark Shaw's Copywriting book.
Lovely mischief. 'last' however many years; 'Somerset Maughan'.
Have Centaur's staff cuts hit the subs' desk?

Funny. CR (not the design of CR of course, but the contents..), Eye and an unmarked photography book got me into design, in between school and college.

More than the magazines though, it was being schooled by Patrick, John and Ian at Falmouth that inspired me more than any thing else.

(that, and my mother telling me "you'll never earn anything being an artist".)

As usual, we love the magazine, but what has happened to Monagraph's funny wee staples?

@ Carol
Glad you enjoyed the magazine. We've slightly re-designed Monograph. We wanted it to feel more substantial and so have upped the cover stock to a 350gsm board - Stephen Sultry Grey. However, the loop stitching can't cope with paper this thick. This left us with a dilemma but, after much discussion, we decided to drop the loop stitching, in the belief that the heavier cover stock would be a major improvement on the old covers.

I have to say, I'm totally unconvinced with the whole 'Monograph' thing.

I can't it, but I find them completely boring, unattractive and waste-paper-bin objects..

The covers from Jan/Feb are bloody brilliant on the other hand. Both thumbs up.
(and I don't say that every other day..)

If you can imagine the word 'help' in the second line of my post, that would be most helpful. Because it seems I forgot to type it..
Sorry.

@Leanne
CR's cover price is £5.70. Yes, it is sold in WH Smith but you can save money if you subscribe, which you can do by following the link at the top of this page.

@Nasser
Could you please provide your full name and subscriber number, if possible, and I will pass your new details on to our circulation department

Anyone know where I can pick up a copy in NYC?
Antonio Carusone
2009-01-26 05:42:14

@ Antonio
CR is stocked in a variety of independent newsstands in NYC but probably your best bet will be Universal News. The stores on Broadway at Broome and at 8th Ave near 58th St have always had copies when I have been there. Unfortunately though the issues are always delayed - you will probably find either the January or even December issue is still on sale and will have to wait a few weeks for February.

@ Patrick

Is this issue going to be available anywhere in the vicinity of South Florida-MIAMI?

Thanks.

Patrick, I live in Harrogate in North Yorkshire and EVERY month CR is never in stock at my WHSmith's or at an independent shop round the corner when its supposed to be released. I have checked again today (TUES 27th) and its still not there.

Harrogate is not by any means a city but its a major town in North Yorkshire, I live about 5 miles from the A1(M), why is it so hard for your distributors to deliver the magazine to Harrogate on time (i.e. not a week later then when you released it).

I've been in London and its been in Smiths on time there and I could understand when it was late when I was in Falmouth (Cornwall) because the distance and lack of major roads. But somewhere like Harrogate next to one of the biggest roads in the country!

There isn't a one off, it happens every month and it isn't WHSmith's not putting it out, because the other independent shop only has it at the same time.

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE can you investigate why it doesn't arrive on time, I'm sure this must have an impact on your sales!

Whsmith and Borders have had a problem with delivery of Creative review but if youre desperate for a copy they're also for sale at Gallerys such as Tate Modern.

Hope thats helpful for you,

@Matthew
Sorry that you have had problems finding CR.There's no reason why it should be delayed - the magazine is actually printed in Cornwall so has to travel even to get into the London shops. I will investigate with our circulation people and let you know what's happening.

@ Carlos
Again, I will investigate and let you know

@ Patrick

Of course it helped...because I ended up going to the Barnes in Hollywood...they do carry it! Unfortunately they were out and they mentioned they tend to run behind on those issues...so if I want the Feb Issue...this is the month to go and check for it.

Thanks again Patrick for going out of your way for that...very much appreciated.

Wow - Cool posters! - Bollywood meets the memphis movement. I definitley think some of the bollywood websites need a Paul Belford makeover...
