Question of the Week 14.07.09
Posted by Mark Sinclair, 14 July 2009, 10:29 Permalink Comments (101)

In the first of our series of questions penned on the trusty CR whiteboard, we want to know about your reading habits...
Each week we'll be posing a new question on the CR Blog and, first up, we want to know how you're using design books in the digital age.
Do you still buy them? If so, what's caught your eye recently?
If you've not shelled out on much this year, how far has the web changed the way you find new creative work, or do research?
What, indeed, is a design book these days? Are there too many out there anyway? An excess of vanity publishing, a glut of monographs? What would you want to see less of?
So – we'd like to know what the last design book you bought was, and what you think about the state of visual arts publishing at the moment.
Question of the Week is produced in partnership with Major Players.

The last few books I purchased was Children Of the Can - 25 years of Bristol Graffiti by Felix Braun - Everyman and his dog knows the local museum has a Banksy exhibition on, but Bristol has a real rich history of graffiti, its had a vibrant scene since the early eighties, before Banksy came a long, he's just part of the picture - this book does a fantastic job of delving into that past and documenting it with some amazing interviews and great pictures, and also a good insight to the more recent artists and writers. My second recent purchase has been Logo by Michael Evamy - this is a really great book, for inspiration and resource, and the book is beautifully designed, clear and a great read - I cant fault it.
I think the market is saturated with design books at the moment, has been for a while, but there's some real gems out there on them shelves, you just got to dedicate some of your time to look for them, great books stores online and on the street like Magma really help, and great mag's like your good selves who highlight the titles worth looking into make the job much easier.

I used to buy loads of 'new' design books but many seem to have dated really quickly. Maybe it is down to the subject matter and the fact that anything showing design work based on what is currently in fashion is bound to look out of date very quickly. Most of the books I buy now are old ones from online book retailers and ebay, books that show great work that even though it is old still stands up to todays viewing.
The only new (fairly recent) books I have bought recently are the Corporate Diversity book (on design for Geigy chemicals), 8vo: on the outside, and Helmut Schmid: design is attitude.
I think that things are getting better in the publishing of graphic design books. There was a time a few years back where there were new ones being released every week that had very little to say. They were just eye candy.
I am interested to see the first releases from Unit Editions, a new publishing venture from Tony Brook at Spin and Adrian Shaughnessy.

Hand job: a Catalogue of Type by Michael Perry and Innovation in invitations, greetings and business card design.
I tend to buy design books as gifts to myself or others as they tend to be quite expensive. I absolutely love design books though and if I had more money I would have shelves full of them!

'Hand Job: A Catalog of Type' by Michael Perry
Magma bookshops are an overpowering experience of design literature and 'stuff'... Pandemic studies of grids, packaging, and business stationery. Designer sketch books (!?). Monographs ten-a-penny. The holes in the filter seem a little wide right now, IMHO

"It's not how good you are, it's how good you want to be" - Paul Arden
I had read it a few times before but didn't have a copy of my own to grace my 'design' bookshelf at home. Amazing read that doesn't get old and good value too. Alot of design books are quite expensive (justifiably though) so its often a luxury when I get new one. I sadly often ask for one for my birthday, which is this saturday, undecided of what to go for this time...!?

I've not really bought too many design books recently, my last being Area 2 by Phaidon.
The design book as eye candy is in danger of being eclipsed by the speed, low cost and accessibility of the internet. The fact that I can all get access to the best design and creativity around within a few clicks of a mouse and then discuss it with others from all over the planet makes the notion of purchasing an expensive book look increasingly pointless.
I love and cherish books but I think that the design book in the sense of showing work produced by a studio/various studios isn't actually needed that much. To me purchasing the monograph of certain designers/studios that I love makes sense but I'm not going to rush out and buy 'The best design in the world ever 383'.
The majority of my design book purchases are either theory or biography based and I keep up with the work of studios through the various excellent blogs out there.

Not really a design book as such, but yesterday I purchased:

Yes i still love a new design book.
when i was younger I used to buy lot's of eye candy books, that were crammed with cool graphics, but now i tend to go for books that have lashings of cool work, with interesting information on agencies.
Airside's book is a really good example of great work, balanced with insightful content.
Anything by Shan Preddy is worth a look, for pure design related business advice.
Also ATTIK's NoiseFive is a great book for design ideas and inspirational reading.

Words are not things by Jack Gardner
It looks good with each page beautiful but it bypasses fashion and goes straight to Zen thinking which, after all, is what it is all about. Don't tell but our studio wall has a photocopy page blow up of. 'Look inward for the most distant view,'
Also, I wish I was the person I'm pretending to be also by Jack Gardner but I wish I hadn't read that.
2009-07-14 14:51:41
The last design book I bought was 'Airside' by Airside - a beautiful tome with limited edition signed poster.
I still love to buy design books, they're such beautiful objects and points of reference. However, after the initial post-purchase perusal, they often get left on my bookshelf and forgotten about. We're bombarded with so much digital-blog-twitter-fabebook led information nowadays, fed directly into our eyeballs that we need to create special 'book-time' in our busy lives as I think they still have an important role to play.

The Art of Looking Sideways — Alan Fletcher
Quote from the Author:
"The book has no thesis, is neither a whodunnit nor a how-to-do-it, has no beginning, middle or end. It's a journey without destination".

I think the last book that I bought was Tolleson Design’s Soak Wash Rinse Spin... Due to the recession and how heavily people now depend on technology, I think that good book design (for all subjects, not just actual design) is more important than ever.

One of very few template books on the market. Although it says it has explenations of how to fold, it doesn't It's still pretty good tho.
I still buy many design books. And yes, I think there r too many of BAD ones on the market. Especially the ones with "The Best of... " like Logos etc.

I love books, and especially design books, although I can't always afford to buy them for obvious reasons. I think books should always be treasured. The phenomenon of the internet does make it quick and easy to search and view design, but also at the same it is quick and east to forget and move on to the next thing. Books are more permanent than this, and should be viewed as so, not a quick 'throw-away' glance on the net.

I love books soooooooooooo much. The last design book I bought was how to be an illustrator by Darrel Rees its a great book and very much like Adrian Shaughnessy's book How to be a graphic designer without lousing your soul. Both of which are sacred scriptures of the industry to me any way, being a recent graduate.
There is something about holding, smelling and reading books that keeps me wanting more books are a drug and i dont intend to quit!

An Illustrated Life (drawing inspiration from the private sketchbooks of artists, illustrators and designers) by Danny Gregory. Not techically a 'design book' of sorts, but I love keeping journals and sketchbooks myself and I love to look at how other people use them to visually record everyday sights, sounds and feelings. Plus, I would love to be included in a book like this one day...

The last book I bought was "Look at This: Contemporary Brochures, Catalogues & Documents" by Adrian Shaughnessy. I've probably flicked through it a couple of times, I actually had to check my Amazon history because I couldn't even remember. Apparently that was in August 2008.
That's not to say there aren't some amazing Graphic Design books and when I was at college I didn't want to spend my money on anything else... well... that's not strictly true. But now I spend a little while in the morning and evening checking a few select blogs and that makes up the majority of my Graphic Design reading.

The last book I bought (well was gifted by my girlfriend) was 'Design as Art' Bruno Munari.
If I didn't have to spend my salary on rubbish things like food, clothing and council tax, I would buy more. There is a wealth of fantastic publications to choose from, past and present. However I would like to see less books featuring designer's making tetrahedrons out of fluorescent construction paper. It should have ended with 'Tactile'.
We are really great at taking something exciting and fun and flogging it for all it's worth.

I've cut back and changed my design book buying habits quite drastically over the past 10 years. I used to buy lots of the "here and now" books — compendiums on current trends etc, and have slowly moved away from those (in part because I'm featured in that kind of book semi-regularly) and because they become (in general) very dated very fast (plus the fact that you can stay up to date by following the hundreds of design portals/blogs nowadays)
Now, I'm buying much more "historical" books, interesting monographs, or books as objects.
So, latest purchases (over the past few months) include: Swiss Graphic Design, Helvetica Forever, Pulphope, Cold War Modern, Neubau Welt, and Corporate Diversity.

Designing Design by Kenya Hara
Although it came out a year or two ago, I bought this hardcover about a month ago at Peter Miller's bookshop in Seattle. For me, buying this book is part of its enjoyment.
I will never stop buying design books because it's about the experience and process which will never become outmoded. If you haven't paged through in person yet, this book is as gorgeous to see as it is to touch as it is to read - complete sensory experience and Peter Miller's selection of new and old design books in inspiring and worth delving through.
What is already out dated is spending loads on every single trendy design publication and buying them amazon.com...

My friends forbidden me to buy more books for the next 10 years! Of course I can only control my desire for books for no longer than 10 months (if not 10 days hehehe). What was the last design book I bought? Good question... I think it was "notes on book design" by Derek Birdsall.
2009-07-19 20:33:11
This IS an interesting question, my last book was Rock Posters, a killer book, beautifully reproduced, BUT check this..I'm on the web 24/7 and I'm still to find the same intense feeling on the web as i do in PRINT.! i had not been into a bookshop in the last 2 years, previously i lived in them.! (loved a bookshop)
but was forced back into one recently, and WOW what a beautiful thing it was seeing quality images, they were like supermodels, look, i love the net but it just ain't the same guys, here's another thing, I'm a fashion photographer have been 16 years, had hire studio's for 9yrs, I still shoot film, people in Sydney have pretty much been shooting Didgy, there is talk by many of going back to film, some never left it, like books film is on the money, the net is great but it ain't cuttin it for many.
i went to see Harpers Bazaar on a go see 6 months ago, the ed's assist freaked when she clocked my books, i asked what's wrong.? she said what is this.? these pictures jump off the page.? (laughing) i said, FILM BABY, FILM, without thinking she turned to the editor and said WE HAVE TO USE FILM...! film make a connection, its almost like you can touch it, I'm not sure didgy makes that connection the same way.........Bainbridge

Subway Art: 25th Anniversary Edition, Documenting NYC Graffiti.
I had this when I was a boy at school, used to copy all the designs for my own work (real and imaginary). Someone nicked because it was such a cool book, nearly cried. Now I'm an adult with an income I can buy the big huge A3 version and reminisce.

I'm a student so could rarely afford to buy 'proper' design books, instead me and my friends often created our own scrapbooks out of printouts, photocopies, photos and magazines we found. It gave us up to date and more personal views of the world in a design sense. In a way I think it helped me develop, even though I have chosen to become a writer I don't worship one particular book but instead became a visual magpie with the world around me. . . did lead to an odd phase of photographing pavements though.
I'm not saying design books are bad, I think they're good as a way of learning more about the history and basics of a discipline, I just believe real inspiration comes from outside the pages of design books.

Perhaps not strictly a design book - at least not in the obvious sense - but its about influencing, informing and impressing with your written reports, presentations and business documents. Great for proposals and any correspondence with clients.
