I am not another smug canvas bag

Ah the canvas tote bag: at first you charmed us, but now you're really quite annoying. Ad agency TBWAVancouver has the answer to all that screenprinted smuggery

As Dmitri Siegel pointed out over at Design Observer (in an article that was reprinted in CR) the green credentials of the canvas tote aren't as clear cut as first imagined. So TBWA's tongue-in-cheek range of Eco Bags come as a bit of a breath of fresh air.

Some of the designs celebrate the pursuits of right-thinking individuals, but that's right as in politics not correctness. Such as everyone's favourite landscape activist, the good ol' logger

The joys of a spot of hunting

Those diesel drinking kings of the road, truckers

And the kind of car Prius-drivers really wish they owned

The bags are available to order here

CRAP. A total waste of time and energy. You could take it down from the site to save a few trees being destroyed and carbon dioxide being produced.

I can see the attraction - there is something twee and annoying about some tote bag designs, particularly those in the more self-righteous vein. Whilst I do 'do my bit', I'm not under the illusion that I'm saving the world single-handedly. That's exactly what these messages seem to safeguard against. That said, I think I'd rather use an understated tesco/plain colour bag than go to this end of the scale.

Nice to see everyone so far has a sense of humor.
I guess sarcasm is no longer valid and both the message and its container have to be politically correct.
Feh!
FWIW, I particularly like the "My other bag is in my SUV".

Cheers!

I actually drive a Prius and don't wish I owned a monster truck. I would, however, put chrome nekkid lady mud-flaps on it if they came in Prius size. These are pretty fun in a juvenile way. I think the graphic treatments are better than the text, as the text comes across as smug as the smugness it is trying to lampoon.

'My other bag is in my SUV' is worth half a limp smile. I wouldn't part with my money though.

Philip, your Prius needs trailer-hitch balls.

I do like the first design, though. But I wouldn't pay for a bloody canvas tote bag. Here in San Francisco they give us reusable paper bags at every opportunity. ;)

Twats. What is it with the Canadian sense of humour? I mean look at how nasty Vice magazine is? What's up with that.

Pretty funny -- too bad tote bags are exclusively for the female demographic.

This is just hilarious! It's honest and straightforward.

As much as I am a supporter of environmental movements, this just takes the cake!

I use the plastic bags they give free at the supermarket. You can line you rubbish bins with them too. Canvas bags are stupid, who wants to carry those things round?

I thought the point of your article in CR about these bags is that they are sort of missing the mark on the environmental 'save the world' idea, and that instead of buying tons of these stupid tote bags that inevitably wind up in a cupboard, we should re-use bags we already have. With that in mind, why would we want these? Mildly amusing at best, so I won't be buying for the humour factor, and meanwhile our 'precious resources' are being used to manufacture them. Sorry guys, but i honestly don't see the point.

Like the first one. The rest are pants and have about as much wit as an entire series of Hi-De-Hi.

I think these bags are fabulous. They recognize that it's important not to let the bags under the sink pile up too much, but also that this task only amounts to a small bit of common consideration for the planet.

Unfortunately for those bags, they weren't anointed with the magical power to protect wildlife, like this one:

Superb!!! I have so many of these hessian-type bags in the boot of my SUV and regularly forget to drag them out when going shopping. This is one that made me smile . . . I would spend what little hard-earned cash I have remaining after filling up my car, on one of these bags ;-)

I actually find using these bags as fuel for a fire is really effective. If you scrunch them up really tightly they're almost as good as using polar bears fur.

So I guess plastic bags are ok? Just kill a few more animals litter the countryside lie to never decompose in a landfill somewhere sure why not

slagging of tote bags by making tote bags... that just doesn't make sense to me. plus, they're not funny. this is just another set of pointless totes that will all end up at the back of our cupboard because their novelty value has worn off.

Oh, please...If you're that bothered about what other people think of you, or that judgemental about other people, no amount of 'design' will do you any good.

this is great, im so fed up of being made to pay for bags in shops, it seems like its just another way for the companies to shift responsibility. Also, when you pay for something in a shop the cost of the building rent, bills, shop assistant, and yes THE BAG is already factored into the price, why should we pay again?? It also takes away from the experience of making a nice purchase when you have to lump it into your handbag. isnt there a better way of solving the problem than making us spend more money or devaluing the consumer experience?

I was recently waiting whilst an assistant carefully folded my purchase into 4 tissue paper sheets only to then be asked for 5p for a bag. I'm all up for saving the environment and I do do my bit, at home and at work but it seems that some companies just aren't doing their bit.

Indeed.. it's not another smug canvas bag, it's another smug jaded comment.

I'm just as sick of the throw away 'i'm cynical / don't suffer fools gladly' point of view, as I am of superficial eco-friendly branding and gimmickry.

This is nothing more than inconsequential posturing.

Boring.
