D&AD Awards 2009: Viral Judging

In our final interview with this year's D&AD awards judges, Eliza Williams talks to Big Spaceship's Michael Lebowitz, the foreman of the Viral jury. Lebowitz discusses the semantics of the term "viral", the evolution of the digital industry and the fact that, while still in its infancy, there's already a sense of maturity emerging within the field…

While I can appreciate what Michael Lebowitz has to say about viral marketing and how it fits into awarding categories, I still feel that viral should have its own award. Most advertising and promotional campaigns now transcend more than one media form, viral is still vastly different in that its almost anti advertising.
Adverts will tell you, what the product or service is, who is the provider, what it does or how its done, gives a sles pitch with its advantages and shows its attractive looks.
Viral is almost the opposite, its secretive, and relys on our human instinct to be curious. We realise someone is spending time and money to produce the advertising, the website, the codes and puzzles, so there must be a reason, and thats what I feel should be rewarded. How anticipated the results are to the viral campaign, that is its success.

Good interview. Viral is definitely developing all the time. The key is to have good content for the viral and something that's easy to share.
We've developed a new idea for charity. It's a digital wristband called a Lovebox that can be shared across the web. We aim to raise awareness and funds for great charities around the world!

A really interesting interview. In my opinion the effectiveness of a viral campaign relies heavily on the viewers responses to identify, either consciously or sub consciously, vital emotive elements to encourage a self-amplification process.
I think Ideas and advancing technologies have a positive correlation. Original techniques and deliverance methods are becoming more available and it is these discoveries that will keep the global population transmitting viruses.
Also i agree with Michael. As any medical professional would tell you, viruses only spread when they are easy to transmit!
