East End Letters by Phil Sheffield, 2009. One-off artwork in frame, 50x70cm. £350

We love a typographic artwork here at CR, so we feel duty bound to tell you about the curiously titled Said Why Eggs? exhibition that opens in London later this week, curated by East End Arts Club...

The show – which previews tonight at Swanfield Inn, just off Brick Lane in East London – features works by 26 artists, printers and graphic designers - who all take inspiration from the building blocks of the written word: the letters of the alphabet.

Alphabet by Hennie Haworth, 2009. Giclee print edition of 10, 50x70cm. £100

Artists exhibiting include Alan Dempsey, Helen Musselwhite, Phil Sheffield, Amy Wicks – and type designer Swifty will be showing a whole A-Z of artworks in a special section of the show.

The Most to Least Used Letters of the Alphabet by Amy Wicks, 2009. Digital print, edition of 15 (original paper cut outs). 50x70cm. £65

Brown Fox by Mark Perronet, 2009. Signed and numbered silkscreen print from an edition of 12. 50x70cm. £60

Animalphabet by Helen Lang, 2009. Digital print edition of 10, 50x70cm. £40

Owls in the Alphabet Tree by Helen Musselwhite, 2009. Original hand cut artwork approx 70 x 15 cm. £180

About the curiously titled, Said Why Eggs. Given the typographic theme, could these words be 'sound-alikes' to letters of the alphabet i.e. Z,Y,X? It's a nice idea if it is.

Why that crude "B" in "In Between"?

... and a seriffed "I"?

I'd like to add this old skool alphabet monogram done in 1877 to the mix...

Nah, ‘Brown fox’ does nothing for me - blando. But ‘The Owls’ are pretty neat. And of course ‘Why Said Eggs…’ is a play on words - there’s a whole alphabet somewhere but I can’t be bothered to go find it right now…

I love type as image and especially this literal image *animalphabet* and cleverer still matching each letter to corresponding animal. I love these examples particularly because it shows how type can have no boundaries, obviously these only a few fun examples but I must admit I have always been a lover of interactive typography so I love paper folding because it allows the user who might not necessarily have any design skills get involved with design and begin to understand how it works.

Am I missing something but what have East End letters to do with the East End? Why is it titled that? Laziness?

The comment above from Franco Lautieri ..."About the curiously titled, Said Why Eggs. Given the typographic theme, could these words be 'sound-alikes' to letters of the alphabet i.e. Z,Y,X? It's a nice idea if it is."
... made me think of the classic F.U.N.E.X Two Ronnies sketch. Well worth a watch: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h-mX9T2qyIQ

Mitchell,

I think the 'U' is for Urchin as in Sea Urchin.

Gorgeous type!
