Opening tonight, Wieden + Kennedy London's new exhibition space, The Cole, plays host to a debut show from young artist Alex Daw...
W+K has developed its new multi-functional events space in The Old Truman Brewery in east London as part of its own extensive workspace expansion.

Pamela by Alex Daw
The aim is to use The Cole as a venue for showing the results of collaborations with creative partners and, tonight, Cut Out & Keep opens in conjunction with Hang-Up, the online gallery that represents the work of emerging artistic talent. Hang-Up also source limited edition prints by a range of artists that are available to buy on their website, hanguppictures.com.
Alex Daw, whose work is showing until 29 November, uses cut-up magazines and paint to create a range of glossy, reassembled pictures, which are exhibited on canvas and glass. According to Hang-Up, "in an age of digital dominance, with traditional objects such as books and magazines being phased to cyberspace, Daw attempts to retain some form of aesthetic tradition, concentrating on the physical beauty of a soon to be forgotten art form."
Anyone up for celebrating the beauty of the magazine is OK by us (even though he does seem to enjoy cutting them up a bit too much).
Cut Out & Keep is at The Cole Building, Wieden + Kennedy, 16 Hanbury Street, London E1 6QR.

lol , good luck to him
he could have at least smeared his own sh*t on it
concentrating on the physical beauty of a soon to be forgotten art form
what magazines and photographs? says who? oh yeh everything is all mini computers now, invisibe robots, were living in a futuristic miasma of silicon carne chips floating about bleeping at us in our tin foil boots.
thank goodness someone kept a record of the idiots out of work with nothing but a glue stick and a nicked magazine.

An exhibition extremely well attended by over 300 people. For me a discovery of a medium that reflects a line of positive thought in vivacious colour and mood and a perception of new art with media in the background. This artist has talent and should be watched and followed. There is nothing loud or obtuse about him. He just demonstrates his love and passion for the visual. Take at look at his piece depicting Jesus. Brilliantly engineered.

@Raphael Kozlowski
i really hope you gave him lots of your money, lots and lots. and lots more too.
i havent seen the jesus 'piece' but i have seen the bits of paper he stuck onto an old crash helmet. im afraid his brilliance of engineering didnt really come across.
are u mutually associated with him by chance?
please give him more of you money, honestly your astute recognition and stalking of his talent will be all he wants im sure of it. and when theres no more to buy, buy it back from yourself, but give him the money !
and whilst your waiting for his latest 'piece' dont pick up , if they still exist that is, any magazines, might ruin a bit your enthusiasm.

"Take at look at his piece depicting Jesus. Brilliantly engineered."
Link anywhere? I'm just working on an Ecce Homo depiction myself. Is Jesus the new diagonal line / triangle in space / dead sparrow of the creative industry I wonder?

An absolutely fantastic show of a young, positive, incredibly talented artist. Brilliant!!...
** I really cannot understand how a blogger namely "slobrity" can be so critcal of a young mans creativity especially when he wasnt fortunate enough to get on the guestlist for such a high profile event to actually see his work? **
Such a shame...

Not feelin' it, me. Joe Orton did it better.

I dont see any mention of the French artists whose work this strongly resembles: Dufrene, Villegle, les affichistes, decollagistes and nouveau realistes - is this artist aware of these references and the original ideas that prompted their actions?
2009-11-27 13:48:34
^ Linda, Whenever I get in my car I don't see any mention of the people who invented cars, or carriages, or combustion engines, or seats, or the wheel, or fire, but I don't hold it against the car maker as evidence that their work is less valuable.

its a shame that only the 'fortunates' are able to see the brilliance of engineering all too evident to themselves behind closed doors and all we other less fortunates only get to see this mish mash.
peasants can be truely awful sometimes cant they, thank goodness for guest lists. and so nice of cr do endorse your 'discovery' for you.
when i get in a car that looks at best like a sh*t copy of another car or just the result of at worst a bored moment, i rather not have a [deleted by moderator] next to me extolling its virtues of positive line and youth, supple and coloured for the road, telling me that i had been privedged to be on a guest list i would recognise the brilliance of engineering.

@little_people
You seem to be writing from exactly the same IP address as "slobrity" - I wonder if by any chance you are related?
2009-11-27 17:27:52
Oh, and the same address as "nissani" on the Tony Kaye thread...

"You seem to be writing from exactly the same IP address as "slobrity" - I wonder if by any chance you are related?"
LOL, busted, and bitter, and possibly on drugs.

opinions are shared questioning cr ability to publish about creatively independently, stories tugging off kaye and this one today 'Anyone up for celebrating the beauty of the magazine is OK by us', really anyone? sounds like an open admission to suck whoever. [deleted by moderator] from the gallery were a bit quick to give love .u fkd up on the idn stories, be a shame for the mag and its little blog to be unable to offer critique and just endorse whatever is asked. times are hard i kno, adworld is cutting back, but youll stay afloat if you turn off radio 1.
2009-11-27 18:08:00
...and 'fearne' is from the same IP address as 'slobrity' 'little_people' and 'nissani'...

Hi guys, Thanks!
I am thrilled to have any mention from CR, I have bought the mag since I was 14 and have always admired the majority of it's output. I guess there are indirect nods in the work that would clarify this.
This 'comments' section is a great device for critique and early show response, ANY comments, negative or otherwise are welcome, though I would love people to physically view the work in the context of the exhibition and the space in which it s housed.
The exhibition IS open to the public - so no exclusions or denial of access for those whom wish to attend.
The 'guestlist' was a list of people whom showed genuine interest prior to the exhibition and registered online or emailed or walked past my studio and enquired.
The work, The artist? None are attempting to cause any sensational response.
Look beyond the commercial facade and easy accessibility of the work and I would like to think the viewer could make some interesting discoveries. The creation and content of the work can be explored via this thread for anyone interested.
In this instance I am just attempting to provide a little clarity, given some of the scathing comments and am more than happy to answer any genuine queries regarding the work.
My work takes months to complete and is painstakingly produced, the entire exhibition has been documented and will be available online soon for my detractors to survey and quite possibly lyrically demolish judging by the current crop of critique!
Does this thread concern the artist, the work, the art?
Please feel free to divulge.

Proud as Punch! The world is full of negativity it is the positivity that keeps us smiling.By God was I smiling on Thursday evening Alex. The last time I was that proud of you was when I gave birth to you. (Sorry to embarrass you). Just read the comments of some who were so desperate to make their thoughts known. Such a shame they didn't have the courage to go and visit your collection, then form an opinion. I loved it. I did love Jesus, your sense of humour shone through p.s. you will see and meet plenty of Judas's on your journey to success. Good Luck Alex in all that you do. We are all behind you just you keep going.

I thought this was Kurt Schwitters for a second.
Nice stuff!
2009-11-30 09:05:42
i saw him on saturday working on covering a chesterfield-type arm chair. reminded me of my foundation course. wish i'd checked it out up close, rather than walking by. i was in a hurry to get to the howies sample sale instead!
2009-11-30 12:41:02
Hey Schnabz, I guess it does, that's the idea I think.
I see it as a memento of the trashy/ throwaway culture we're sort of consumed by, but don't hang back and question. Tradition being stripped of any meaning. Your 'Howies' sample sale trip kinds of sits well with that. Close up are engraving, drawings and paintings of anything from fashionistas to war casualties and fabric samples. It's a bit of a performance piece having the thing in the window with the artist working...beats mannequins I guess?
