Using around 3,000 still images, Andersen M Studio has animated an extract from Maurice Gee's novel, Going West, for the New Zealand Book Council...

Colenso BBDO commissioned Andersen M Studio to create the stop-frame animation, which took around eight months to complete. The film was designed and animated by the studio's Line Andersen (one of CR's Creative Futures from 2006) and photographed by her brother, Martin, who set up Andersen M Studio in 2000.

"The entire film is handmade, using only 10A scalpel blades and paper," explains Martin Andersen. "It was photographed on two SLR cameras and lit using Dedo lights."

The film is currently showing as a cinema ad in New Zealand and has been released on DVD as part of a promotional pack for the upcoming film, Under the Mountain.

Design and animation: Line Andersen / Andersen M Studio. Photography and lighting: Martin Andersen / Andersen M Studio. Sound design: Mikkel H. Eriksen / Instrument Studio.

Superbly stunning.

You have to admire the craftsmanship and effort that has clearly
gone into this. And, no doubt, a bucket-load of patience too.

Bravo.

As beautiful and original as it undoubtedly is, I just wonder if there was a return on investment? I'd love to know what it cost the NZ Book trust, where they got their funding and who they had to persuade to part with all of that money?

Great point Rob. If only there were some way to quantify beauty and see if they really got their moneys worth.

As an aside, I now know that the NZ Book Council exists.

Amazing piece! You've got to admire the makers' patience....although it definitely paid off! The intricacy is outstanding, and the fast-pace keeps you watching and engaged throughout :)

Reminded me of the artist Peter Callesen, who also works with paper cut-outs in a similarly delicate way:

Unbelievable work. I felt almost like when I was looking Avatar in 3D. Really can't describe the sensation. Step by step we are entering a new era, and that is 3D era.
