Johnny Kelly's Olympic Spirit

Music Video / Film

Nexus director (and previous CR One To Watch) Johnny Kelly has made a new film using paper and stop frame animation - this time for the International Olympic Committee (IOC)...

The new film, Olympic Spirit, commissioned by agency Cole & Weber United, has no narrative as such - it's more a celebration of the Olympics through bright and colourful iconography - all created by by cutting shapes out of coloured paper:

"The animation is made up of 338 individual paper collages, roughly A4 in width," Kelly tells us of the film-making process. "Once these had been created they were photographed with a digital stills camera and then sequenced using a computer," he continues. "The collages were put together over a period of about four weeks and I was very fortunate enough to work with Elin Svensson, who I'd worked with last year on my Seed film for Adobe CS4, and who worked tirelessly again to help create the collages with me for this film.

"This project was a lovely opportunity to engage with and contribute to the Olympic games," adds Kelly. "Being one of the least sporty people I know – this was clearly my only way in."

I like it! It was fun, clean and simple (though obviously not too simple to make) - what led to the inspiration behind using paper stop motion?

this for a home swap holiday sports show right?
im waiting for the lovely amanda lamb to introduce this weeks hopefuls...

is this really for the whole wide world to see and admire? stuffy ole britain still hasnt overcome re-doing a retro style. if theres ever a place to show the absolute contemporary best of talent its the olympics. perhaps the athletes should dress in shorts and t shirts, run in plymsols and take it a bit easier around the track.
the walls gone back up in this one.

Overall I'd say it's very cute.

I think it's a nice piece of work, very well made. I'd be dead proud if it was a mine.

So, are we still all doing cute then?

I like it. Too often people would rather force a modern technique into their work to make it feel contemporary; whereas I think this is packed to the rafters with charm and elegance. The average Joe watching this will probably think it's delightful, and I imagine it'll put a smile on the faces of most creatives.

@wenton: ... ever seen 3D Postman Pat? It's bloody awful. Sometimes the classic mediums have the most effect; this isn't an opportunity to show off; but to create something with maximum effect. As it happens I think this has achieved both.

I think it comes off as being quite drab and spiritless - retro icky.

Bit of a waste. All that craftsmanship pretty much wasted on something so unmoving.

is this inspired by those ads for bupa?

corporate retro makes me cringe. agree with others, for an olympic showcase under a worldwide spotlight, a cross between a bank advert and a holiday show doesnt cut it.

if i want to look at bright colours and simple shapes, i can look at buses.
