The Pool Gallery in Berlin is showing an exhibition of photographs by Harald Hauswald that offer an insight into everyday life in East Berlin under the GDR.

Hauswald chronicled ordinary life in East Berlin in the 1970s and 80s, a time when such an activity was strictly forbidden. Born in 1954 near Dresden, Hauswald graduated from photograpy school in 1976 and then travelled through the GDR to Berlin documenting what he saw, despite being already under state surveillance. His images offer a rare glimpse of everyday life in Berlin in these times, and Hauswald continues to document reunified Germany today.

Harald Hauswald: Auferstanden aus Ruinen is at the Pool Gallery until November 14. More info is here.

Great photography, more classic examples of why black&white photography is amazing. Looking at some other examples of Hauswald's work, I have to say his b&w lifestyle shots stand out head and shoulders above the rest.

Its incredibly important that photographers continue to document and then safely store, photos of everyday life. With the profusion of differing ways of taking photos - mobile phones, PDAs, digital cameras etc. the photos that are taken by ordinary people of their friends and families are simply left on the memory cards and then deleted or lost. In 50 years time will it be possible to find photographs of say Postmen, Milkmen delivering milk on electric floats or everyday life? Hauswald has captured life here in such a vibrant way, its inspiring

Sorry, but it was not forbidden to take photographs of everyday life in the GDR. Otherwise taking holiday snaps would have been illegal, too.
