Graphic designer vs client

This brutally funny take on a rather familiar scenario has been doing the rounds recently (thanks Gary Cook for the tip). Given the subject matter and its suggestion of a lack of value being placed on design skills, perhaps it's a little ironic that it was made using xtranormal, a 'text-to-movie' service that turns users' scripts into mini-films using its predesigned characters and backgrounds.

It's a lot of fun and has potentially exciting uses in education as well as in the "dicking about at work making funny stuff to send your mates" sector, but here's what the makers have to say: "Xtranormal’s mission is to bring movie-making to the people. Everyone watches movies and we believe everyone can make movies."

Hmmmm, just like everyone can design a logo, right?

Of course, don't you know, all you need is Microsoft Word.

like to work with idiots, this hits the metaphorical nail!

this is my husband and mines life in a nutshell... just last week I had 6, yes 6 jobs from 'friends needing a favour' what the hell do they think we are doing all day? maybe next time I get asked a little favour I will ask if they can spend a day or two doing my ironing in return! and the clients aren't much better, I was told by a client who after receiving an estimate from me for some character concepts that they could get it done in the far east for £50, I promptly told them to go and get it done in the far east! ... sorry letting off some steam.

More designer versus client malarkey. They are not the enemy... or at least we need to stop assuming they are. Fact is that making a 'graphic design' is really easy to do these days. Doing it well is another matter entirely. This is why we need to keeping talking our skills up, not running them down like in this lame vid.

In what other profession would you be in competition with "my wife's 8 year old nephew who created a logo in word"?

I'm going to get my 2 year old daughter to build my extension!!

I'm a picture researcher specialising in visual branding 'for business promotion. Yes, we get done over just the same - I laughed until I cried! And now clients can use the recession as convenient crutch for their miserliness and lack of professional respect.

Brilliant vid Gary.

There will always be clients like this.... a lot companies employ the office admin to organise the web project, brochure etc. So then we end up dealing with inexperienced clients. Stage 1: P is for Pantone.... A is for (well you can guess).

These companies will often be the same ones who ask loads of designers to pitch and don't know what they are looking at. Stay clear!

Just did this as a bit of fun after one of my colleagues sent me a link which had the extranormal post roll (cheers Pete). Never imagined it would prove so universal in appeal as I was drawing on some of my own Scottish experiences.

Loved the video. Hate that it hits so close to reality.

How terrible and true. I started my company a few years ago and as I needed the money I would try and deal with these people. "As long as its done within the next 17 minutes that should be o.k." or my personal favorite - "i can go to crowdspring and choose my own price -why cant i do that with you? you're doing the same thing."

since i took that policy i have become much more profitable and less stressed...
be bold people stick to your principles and pick and choose your clientele, work for the people who have an ounce of respect for the undustry
