Cadbury releases a single

Cadbury Dairy Milk is continuing along its eclectic advertising path with its latest venture – a single release, with accompanying music video.
The single, titled Zingolo, celebrates the chocolate becoming Fairtrade certified. As Ghana is at the heart of its Fairtrade business, the single is made in collaboration with Ghanaian music star, Tinny, and the video, directed by Ringan Ledwidge and shown above, was also shot on location in the country. The project was created by Fallon advertising agency, who were also behind the Cadbury ads Gorilla, Trucks and Eyebrows. A preview of the music video aired on UK TV over the weekend, and the track is available to download via iTunes now.

Brilliant love the concept and tunes although the 3D animaton is a little bit too raw in places !

Not a fan of this being used as the new Cadbury's advert, seems to have lost the simplicity which made the previous ads in this campaign so appealing.

My family and I were watching the television one evening this weekend and we saw the preview that you mention being aired. One of the members of my family called out 'look, it's the new Cadbury's advert!' and we all stopped talking to watch the video. I think that shows how Cadbury's and Fallon have captured the countries interest through these advertisements and therefore just how much of a success they have been.
There have been many spoofs done of the videos done by people all over the world, including individuals at my school who reinacted the eyebrows advertisement during my final year. This clearly shows how brilliantly these adverts have caught the nation's awareness and I can only view these adverts therefore as a brilliant success!

It's bizarre, it's full of cliches and stereotypes, yet against all the odds, it's enjoyable.

I´ll better go straght to my Itunes page then. I have not seen or heard it yet, but now I´m very curious.

How much fun is that - I love it! Now, if they'd only improve the taste of the chocolate ...

I like the concpet, but I think the execution falls a little short: the tune's not the strongest, and while the video has some nice touches, it somehow doesn't quite hang together. Then I guess these ads will always suffer by comparison to the gorilla.

I think this is the only advert to come close to the innovation of the first (Gorilla) one. Its not perfect, but as someone notes above: "against all the odds, it's enjoyable."

Consider these terms 'free-rein' 'ganja' and 'emporers new clothes', mix them all up and this is what you get. I'm a CD, so I can see exactly where this has come from, but Cadbury's need to rethink their brand communication strategy quickly - surely the surprise takeover bid by Kraft will have woken them from their slumber?

It's a shame they don't show Ghana as a richer country. Africa does have cities with wealth. It's not just poor rural areas. Still... nice advert, apart from the stereotypes.

• It begins well but (ironically) loses momentum when things start happening.
• The tune is a bit weak, there must be better, catchier tracks coming out of Zaire.
• Some of the compositing is shockingly bad, look at the shadow beneath the head as it cruises along the street.
A nice try though.

I really dislike this advert.Everytime it comes on I get angry. It's very stereotypical and it is not at all enjoyable to watch from a Black British piont of view at all. What on earth is the piont of people bursting into dance just because of Cabury's fair trade? I hate the image of an 'Black' face made up from a cocobean? It is not clever, cool or creative it's just stupid, ulgy and piontless.

Hey Marie,
I really disagree with you. This ad shows the modern side of Ghana, and is very much a reflection of its spirit. The head, the paintings, Tinny and his song are all created by Ghanaians, as far as I have read, and the all proceeds of the single go back to Ghana. They are not bursting into song because Cadbury have gone fair trade -this ad is part of a minute music promo for a single and is meant to show joy from Ghana (where the cocoa comes from).
Its a refreshing portrayal of Africa and fairtrade and is crazy fun.

I have read several comments on this ad, and I dont know whether most people are commenting on the same advert I have seen.
I am a Ghanaian, grew up and lived in Ghana most part of my life. Honestly, anytime my friends and I are watching tv and it comes on, it makes us cringe. We just dont get the point of having something like a 'voodoo' head spin and move about in rural Ghana and get people to dance around on bare, bad roads! Like Marie says this isnt modern Ghana at all.
I believe there are better ways of communicating the significance, importance and benefits of fairtrade to a community than as was captured. This one is almost impossible to relate to. Oh and as for the term 'Zingolo', we are still trying to figure out where it comes from since it sounds foreign to us. I am not a native Ga speaker altough I speak it fluently, but my friends who are native Ga speakers claim they have'nt heard of such a word. Is it a recent jargon or something?
Finally, out of curiosity, I will like to know why Cadbury airs the advert on foreign networks and not Ghanaian or African channels on Sky like OBE TV (207) BEN TV (184) Hi TV etc?

Well looking at YouTube comments it seems that this ad has been seen as a good thing by Ghanaian people over here. Guess it's subjective though. Think it's a good thing personally, shining a light on Ghanaain music and culture. Zingolo was written by Tinny who is Ghanaian - so you'd have to ask him what it means.

Embrace Fair Trade, make a product that stands for quality with an enthical policy and stop the rediculous ad that is full of sterotypes and in my opinion couldn't sell water to a thirsty man let alone chocolate to a bunch of chocoholics. Save money and dump the agency.

Every year Cadburys spend a huge 70-80 billion on marketing and i think the new Ghana advert really shows what Ghana is like and I really love this but I don’t think it is as good as the gorilla advert or the eyebrow advert. Although the advert really sums up Ghana I think it could be better. The song in the background isn't that catchy which i think it needs to be.
