Party like it's 2009 and sponsored by Microsoft

Stuck for ideas on how to crank up the fun at your Windows 7 launch party? Well, luckily, Microsoft has produced a brilliant guide to throwing a bash in their honour...
Between 22-29 October, thousands of House Parties (yes, it's trademarked) are set to happen across the world in support of the new Microsoft 7 package.
If you're unaccustomed to having friends around, getting the drinks and nibbles flowing, hey, even getting your iPod set to a great playlist, Microsoft has kindly put a short film up on YouTube that will set you right.
Then you can happily go about promoting their products from the comfort of your own kitchen! PAAAARRRTAAAY!
Enjoy this. If you can get through it.

My God, but it's painful.
They've disabled comments and ratings for the video. That seems to be the smartest decision here.

@Alan
I noticed this comment on the House Party site earlier:
DarylG said...
"It will be cool to show how Windows 7 works within an everyday situation. I hope I don't sound anything like the hosts in the host video parties."
Quite.

How generic American suburbia can you get? Slightly geeky white guy LOVES uploading photos! I wish I was "in" on that joke.
There's got to be something more to this, is it April 1st already?
2009-09-23 17:11:47
Speechless....
2009-09-23 17:12:47
Why? God why?
2009-09-23 17:13:34
It's a joke.... isn't it? Surely??
2009-09-23 17:21:58
It's like a particularly bad porn film - minus the porn
2009-09-23 17:30:35
It doesn't just crush your soul; it zaps your will to live.
2009-09-23 17:38:15
You're kidding me, right?
2009-09-23 17:49:10
Wow, they've even managed to fit every marketable demographic in one awkward shove.
Except a 4 year old child, but she's been used in other Microsoft stuff.

4:00 in the afternoon is when all the good parties happen.
2009-09-23 19:12:48
Also, you should really hide the clock so the edits aren't so painfully obvious. "We shot this scene two hours before the one you just watched (nervous laughter)!"
Also, that camera work is making a little nauseated.

Amazing! some great comments on the 'House Party' site

At least they let the black guy stay at the party...

oh my....
...because i really needed my grandma to tell me how to throw a party!
Kinda shows whos winning the apple/windows battle.
2009-09-23 23:39:55
After watching that, will anyone be willing to admit being related to someone working for Microsoft? Or just feel sorry for them?
2009-09-23 23:43:09
I got to 29 seconds. I can take no more.
2009-09-23 23:49:15
wow! I have learnt nothing about Windows 7 at the end of the clip (which I actually managed to finished watching)
2009-09-24 02:09:56
Wow. Maybe this is a form of reverse psychology - you know, you forward the link on (or post it!) because it's so... odd. The everyone watches it and has a laugh. But they're still watching it... mostly.
2009-09-24 02:51:04
4:44-5:10 THAT'S WHAT SHE SAID
2009-09-24 03:56:27
i recommend microsoft five grams of mdma and shut the fuck up activity
2009-09-24 04:45:34
I hope they didn't pay for this...
2009-09-24 08:49:41
1:22 black guy holding lemon, cut, 1:24 strawberry. And watch the white guys drink nearly empty at 3:21 and magically refill by 4:04.
Don't know why I watched it in excruciating detail.

On the basis of this video, Windows 7 = pyramid scheme.
2009-09-24 09:59:29
Oh no, this made me want to convert to windows and throw a party with my grandma, 2 things that are stuck in the past
2009-09-24 10:08:10
Every bit as bad - and more - than I knew it would be. After all - it's a PC.
2009-09-24 14:01:23
oh dear, i bet apple are kicking themselves that they didn't launch snow leopard with such panache! surely this is just everything that is wrong with windows in one ad?
wheres the bowl for the car keys?!
2009-09-24 14:05:27
Surely this is Microsoft showing they have the sense of humour to take the piss out of themselves?
Looks to me like a QVC / extreme marketing parody – I mean come on, they KNOW no-one would ever throw a party to celebrate the launch of a Windows update.
I think Microsoft want to say, "Look we can do humour too." I guess its not obvious enough though. I suppose they need to fight past the fact us Brits have such a low opinion of American marketing, that we automatically assume they're dumb enough to make a campaign like this seriously.
It seems unlikely to me that they would make such an ultra-stereotyped campaign without intending it as a piss-take, especially after they (in my opinion) made Apple's campaign look like childish mud-slinging with their 'I'm a PC' campaign.
So, are Microsoft cleverly subverting dumbed-down marketing and mocking themselves? Or are they simply naive? I hope for their sake its not the latter!

2009-09-24 15:28:29
Rob - you've broken the CR blog!!
Was this thing developed using Windows 7?
2009-09-24 15:40:11
@Ian/Rob
Ha. Sorry Rob, we didn't know you could do that, I've had to split your laughter up.
2009-09-24 16:02:56
"If you can get through this" ...no! :O
2009-09-24 16:46:50
Where's the beer?
2009-09-24 18:01:05
I think I'm going to have to retract my comment.
I just went on their website and it really is for real. I can't believe it. People have actually signed up to have parties about an operating system. My faith in the dark side was misplaced.
2009-09-24 18:46:24
I'm a PC...with a rum and coke! I Looooove THIS Cooompaaany!

The old woman's glad they had 'their' party 'a little ahead of schedule', because she'll be dead by the time she gets the new OS working properly.

Is Mark Wnek writing ads again?
2009-09-25 13:09:56
Maybe its pitched perfectly in the middle? Some people will choose to throw a party and spread the word, the rest of us will take the piss and spread the word? Its a stroke of genius :S
2009-09-25 13:12:32
Can't wait to see the Apple response.
I'm a PC family vs I'm an Apple family. Could get messy.
2009-09-25 13:38:38
Oh right.
I was just watching and waiting and thinking, surely there's a gag coming?! Is that innuendo?
Anyway, maybe it's supposed to have global appeal? That's not an explanation I know.
2009-09-25 13:45:45
Grandma at 3:59: "Jesus this is terrible, how long will this last? How many takes of this train wreck do we have to do??"
2009-09-25 13:48:29
Surely Apple made this?
2009-09-25 14:05:20
I thought it was an Apple ad, but I'm maybe missing the point?
2009-09-25 14:09:13
Is this real? It makes me feel sick. I couldn't even watch it all.
2009-09-25 14:23:20
is tthis for real ? i was out in like 15 seconds...

Wow... truly, deeply, nauseatingly disturbing. This piece of viral marketing whether intended as a mock-fomercial or not is about as bad as it gets. How could anyone have thought this was a good idea?It reinforces everything those in the anti-PC camp have always felt about PC world. And if, for a moment you can put aside how appallingly bad this whole thing was, the actual scenario of hosting a party and telling people how to get involved was just so mind numbingly confusing it summed up all that is evil and wrong and frustrating about running Windows. I want the two minutes I wasted watching this back.
2009-09-25 22:01:25
STOP IT STOP IT STOP IT... starve it of advertising oxygen, don't look at it. don't blog about it, then it will just go away.
2009-09-26 10:25:35
It's a brilliant idea, small scale promotion on a large scale.
2009-09-28 10:14:32
speechless
2009-09-28 10:47:54
YEAHH WOOP WOOOOOOP, I wanna be at that party.
I have used an Apple Mac my whole career but I am now seriously considering switching to a PC, if this is the kind of ground breaking experiences I am gonna get with Microsft then sign me up!
Hillarious.
2009-09-28 11:01:52
The ending's a classic!
It's got to be a hoax?!
2009-09-29 10:18:42
Oh, nasty, nasty, nasty-make-it-go-away !!! Disturbing, kitch and MINDLESS ! Perhaps this makes it good ?!
2009-09-29 11:58:13
Over complicated, this make me realise what's bad about wasting your time on computers all the time it makes me want to smash mine up (and its a Mac) and go back to how life was before computers and more importantly what the word Party meant!
PS I think this is Microsofts way of being subversive and the anti cool of Mac!
2009-09-30 17:39:51
What a "random" selection of friends. This is BRILLIANT, it just proves how sh!t Microsoft are.
2009-10-01 12:07:43
I feel sick...
