Stuck for ideas on how to crank up the fun at your Windows 7 launch party? Well, luckily, Microsoft has produced a brilliant guide to throwing a bash in their honour...

Between 22-29 October, thousands of House Parties (yes, it's trademarked) are set to happen across the world in support of the new Microsoft 7 package.

If you're unaccustomed to having friends around, getting the drinks and nibbles flowing, hey, even getting your iPod set to a great playlist, Microsoft has kindly put a short film up on YouTube that will set you right.

Then you can happily go about promoting their products from the comfort of your own kitchen! PAAAARRRTAAAY!

Enjoy this. If you can get through it.

My God, but it's painful.

They've disabled comments and ratings for the video. That seems to be the smartest decision here.

@Alan
I noticed this comment on the House Party site earlier:

"It will be cool to show how Windows 7 works within an everyday situation. I hope I don't sound anything like the hosts in the host video parties."

How generic American suburbia can you get? Slightly geeky white guy LOVES uploading photos! I wish I was "in" on that joke.

There's got to be something more to this, is it April 1st already?

Wow, they've even managed to fit every marketable demographic in one awkward shove.

Except a 4 year old child, but she's been used in other Microsoft stuff.

Also, you should really hide the clock so the edits aren't so painfully obvious. "We shot this scene two hours before the one you just watched (nervous laughter)!"

Also, that camera work is making a little nauseated.

Wow. Maybe this is a form of reverse psychology - you know, you forward the link on (or post it!) because it's so... odd. The everyone watches it and has a laugh. But they're still watching it... mostly.

Surely this is Microsoft showing they have the sense of humour to take the piss out of themselves?

Looks to me like a QVC / extreme marketing parody – I mean come on, they KNOW no-one would ever throw a party to celebrate the launch of a Windows update.

I think Microsoft want to say, "Look we can do humour too." I guess its not obvious enough though. I suppose they need to fight past the fact us Brits have such a low opinion of American marketing, that we automatically assume they're dumb enough to make a campaign like this seriously.

It seems unlikely to me that they would make such an ultra-stereotyped campaign without intending it as a piss-take, especially after they (in my opinion) made Apple's campaign look like childish mud-slinging with their 'I'm a PC' campaign.

So, are Microsoft cleverly subverting dumbed-down marketing and mocking themselves? Or are they simply naive? I hope for their sake its not the latter!

Wow... truly, deeply, nauseatingly disturbing. This piece of viral marketing whether intended as a mock-fomercial or not is about as bad as it gets. How could anyone have thought this was a good idea?It reinforces everything those in the anti-PC camp have always felt about PC world. And if, for a moment you can put aside how appallingly bad this whole thing was, the actual scenario of hosting a party and telling people how to get involved was just so mind numbingly confusing it summed up all that is evil and wrong and frustrating about running Windows. I want the two minutes I wasted watching this back.

Over complicated, this make me realise what's bad about wasting your time on computers all the time it makes me want to smash mine up (and its a Mac) and go back to how life was before computers and more importantly what the word Party meant!

PS I think this is Microsofts way of being subversive and the anti cool of Mac!
