Brighton's West Pier lit up by lasers

Two nights ago on Wednesday February 10, Brighton's West Pier (what's left of it) was lit up in the most spectacular fashion by a nifty rig of lasers...

The laser installation entitled 'A Pier Appears' was the first in a series of events curated by Josef Valentino and commissioned by Tiger Beer to celebrate Chinese New Year - yes, it's the Year of the Tiger this year and the beer brand seems determined to take advantage of the situation.

This particular spectacle was for one night only and the piece was created by French lighting studio Creatmosphere - who used computer-controlled lasers for the project, which - by all accounts - stopped traffic and drew a crowd on the beach, despite a brief snowy blizzard which, as the next image attests, added nicely to the project: turns out snow falling through laser beams looks pretty amazing...

Here's a short film we spotted on YouTube of the event (which features project curator Josef Valentino):

These photos make it look a lot better than it actually was. It was eyecatching, yes, but the advertising for it claimed that the lights would recreate how the pier formerly looked... wheras all they actually did was just trace the outlines of the existing structure.
Still, it was free, and pretty beautiful to watch, just a bit of a let down...

That is in fact the West Pier in Brighton. The Brighton Pier (or Palace Pier for the true Brightonians) is still very much intact. ;)

@James - thanks for the Pier name info (post tweaked accordingly) - apologies for any pier confusion!

I had photographed the West Pier during the week. Afterwards we discussed how it has never been lit up!
It was very subtle lighting at the start when the lighting drifted across and around the pier. It was bitterly cold. Still the event brought people out, and they got to see the terrific lighting on the newly refurbished Brighton Bandstand.

Yes agree with Emma. It did not look like that on the night. Some pretty good photography on time lapse I feel!

Great idea though, just would have been amazing if it did look like the images above.

Love the first photo of the pier, time lapse does create some nice photo's. Although people say it wasn't as good as the photo's i would've still liked to gone and seen it!

Thanks for the post.

Shame it was so crap. A live event should be just that - not something that will look good on a long exposure. It was at the bottom of my square and I lasted 5 minutes.

Now if they had done something like this... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UtuW1S0M7aY

The photo's do make it look a little better than it was, but it still looked pretty amazing in my opinion...especially during the brief blizzard at the begining of the night! We were standing directly underneath the lasers whilst it was snowing and it looked awesome :D Great job Creatmosphere!

The first time i saw the Brighton burnt West pier ,i thought this was totally a useless structure. Now,that i have seen this beautiful laser effects created over it.I personally think it may be most ideal item for special works exhibitions for the beauty of Brighton and the local tourists especially for viewing during later hours when its dark.Amazing!

The first pic looks really good and the whole concept of it was a great idea. Shame I missed it as I would have really liked to see it in person. Would be good if they did it again soon.
