CR Survey: Sidelines

When he is not designing books for Isaac Mizrahi, Peter Buchanan-Smith devotes his time to his side project, a range of beautifully crafted axes called Best Made. We want to find out what sidelines you have on the go...

New York-based Best Made Co. was founded by designer and author Peter Buchanan-Smith, and outdoorsman and environmental entrepreneur Graeme Cameron. The pair brought out their first range of hand-crafted choppers last year.

But Buchanan-Smith is far from the first creative type to bring out a sideline. Simon Waterfall (of, until recently, Poke) has his Social Suicide clothing range

while his ex-colleague Nic Roope has his Hulger phones

then there is Digit founder Daljit Singh and his soon-to-be-launched range of sausages, Mr Singh's Bangras

not to mention Sir John Hegarty's wine

and various creative types are involved in the high-end cycling wear  range Rapha.

But these are just the better-known examples. We want to find out if any of you also have sideline projects, or if you know of others who do. If we find enough interesting ones, they will feature in a future issue of the magazine. So, please let us know in the comments below, with links.

We want to know what you get up to when you're not designing/art directing etc etc (or reading this here blog...)

I very much like that the axe handles taper to look like deer hooves.

I spend so much time in front of a computer screen that I sometimes feel that life is my sideline project.

Kidding, except not entirely.

When i'm not painting (the real me), I make bespoke canvases for other artists in the UK, but somehow my sideline has become my mainline - must redress the balance (www.harrismoorecanvases.co.uk), but I do love being involved the the creation of other artists work, even if it is providing the materials.

My agency brews beer. It tastes bad - but we're hoping it'll improve as we do.

I remember selling Hegarty's wine in OddBins before I ever knew who he was. I'd love to share a bottle with him now.

I make cider (2 Crows Cider Press) with a group of friends and we're hoping (as we refine it) to start selling it through pubs. At the moment it's just for personal consumption.

It's great fun doing it, better drinking it, and it's spawned a whole load of creative side projects of it's own, like the felt apple badges I made everyone, the logo design competition, forthcoming clothing and turned apple-wood goblets (I'm hoping to learn how to do this!), not to mention this season's hydraulic apple press and bespoke scratter!

Great article!

We just finished these prototypes for "Flower Pots":

Actually we always try to involve some "sideline projects" and cooperations in our daily business ...

Another designer, Mark Henning, and I are trying to create public transport maps for Cape Town, South Africa (and hopefully the model will be applied around the country) - if you live in a developed European city you might take having a map of where your busses and trains go for granted, but here using public transport can be really frustrating. Not only is it quite a challenge developing a visual system for our local context (with all of its social challenges, 11 official languages and informal taxi's) but also wading through the beurocracy and red tape of local authorities....

We've been working on this in our spare time with no funding for the last 8 months or so.

I know this website pretty much sucks at the moment (www.publictransportmaps.co.za) but I am hoping to be able to update it with more detail on what we have done and progress on the project so that other people who want to make a difference can learn from our experiences (just as soon as I have finished making this lame corporate brochure / logo / website / singing dancing e-card / annoying mailer disguised and something interesting / whatever else is on my to do list *sigh*)

We're into apps and charities, so our sidelines are those. Check out http://www.lovebox.org.uk . http://www.digilove.org is coming soon and we have various other fun and useful apps which are soon to be released.

There's nothing like the thrill of a new client project, but hopefully with these sidelines we won't need to rely on them as much and can focus our energies on products!
