The new July issue of Creative Review hits the shops this week - flip it over to find the very first Creative Review Illustration Annual - which is choc full of the very best illustration work - as selected by our esteemed judges. Here's a preview...

David Crowley profiles the great Polish graphiste, Roman Cieslewicz ahead of a major retrospective at the RCA from July 16 to August 7

Eliza Williams meets Andy Cameron - one of the founders of the Antirom collective of new media pioneers in the 1990s. Now he's joined Weiden + Kennedy in London...

Drawing on a backgound in user interface design for global electronics brands, ustwo has emerged as a leader in engaging app design

Bill Gardner, of Logolounge.com, picks out this year's major trends in logo design from the 35,000 new marks on his site

In Crit, Adrian Shaugnessy attended Chaumont's festival of graphic design and reports back for us...

And magculture's Jeremy Leslie looks at the independent magazine successes of this year's D&AD's magazine and newspaper entries

Flip over the issue et voila - our very first Illustration Annual - which follows the same format as our successful Photography Annual.
Entries were invited in the following categories: Personal (self initiated or experimental work, which has either not been commissioned or published before); Design (illustrations that have been commissioned by design studios); Editorial (work commissioned by newspapers, magazines etc); and Advertising. As with the Photography Annual, we appointed one judge per category - we find that a single, knowledgeable judge works better than a committee in this context.
Our judges were Angus Hyland, a partner at Pentagram; Stephen Petch, art director of The Independent on Sunday's Review; and Paul Cohen of McCann-Erickson and co-founder of Draft magazine. All were asked to select their favourite work as well as their choices for our Best in Book section...

Congratulations to everyone whose work is featured and thank you to all who entered.

This month's Monograph features Matt Siber's Floating Logos project – which comprises dozens of images of logos on various photographed signage but with all the supporting structures "removed" in Photoshop...

The Illustration Annual / July issue hits the shops (and subscribers' door mats) this week.

Would I be right to assume, if I didn't hear anything back that my submission didn't make it into the illustration annual? I entered under the unpublished category.

Although my submission wasn't picked, I am quite glad I entered something for the Illustration Annual; it was an interesting process and it has been useful to see some of the work that was accepted and to consider why that might have been chosen. It looks like a varied selection of styles and types of project made it in and hopefully this will be the first of many Illustration Annuals.

@zuko
Ah, you'll have to buy the issue to find out! But OK, it's by Noma Bar. Great project.

Personally I LOVE page 56, I think that Graham Watson bloke is very clever, and he's SO good looking don't you think? ;-)
On a serious note. This month's magazine is packed full of loveliness. Not only the Readers' Review debating the D&ADs, but also the GORGEOUS Illustration Annual.
Don't delay, buy it today.

I shot very similar photos of US icons when I went to the States in the 80s it was really good to see them again with the very clever added twist of losing the supports! cheers Grant

Why didn't you feature super-cool kids magazine OKIDO in your Illustration issue?! it's brimming with the work of wonderful young illustrators (as well as super-dude Brit artist Paul Noble and St Martin's Artist-in-Residence and Tate favourite, Rachel Ortas) and it's not only for kids...Shame!
