'Gay McDonald's Ad' goes viral

McDonald's has launched a new ad campaign that aims to celebrate the diversity of its customers, and one of the spots, featuring an interaction between a father and his gay teenage son, is gathering a lot of attention online...

The campaign, from BETC Euro RSCG in Paris, sees the brand move away from its usual focus on the traditional family set-up to recognising a wider clientele. Alongside the afore-mentioned father-son ad, there is another featuring two 'silver surfers' shown adopting new identities online, and a final ad, cut from the more traditional mould, that illustrates the similarities between a mother and daughter. The ads are directed by French cinema director Xavier Giannoli.

It is the ad featuring a father and son that is causing discussion online, however. The spot shows the son talking to his boyfriend on the phone before his father joins him. It then becomes clear that the father is unaware of his son's sexuality as he jokes about how he "could get all the girls". The spot is in French but a subtitled version has been leaked online, and viewed over a million times on YouTube.

Much of the discussion online has been focused around whether McDonald's could do a similar ad for the US market - though of course with the internet, all ads are global now, especially if they go viral. It is testament though to how middle-of-the-road McDonald's' image is that such a coy spot is causing controversy. Whereas Burger King's advertising has ploughed an experimental path, McDonald's' has always been exceptionally safe. It will therefore be interesting to see where the brand's marketing goes from here - will the attention this spot has garnered see the brand adopt a new 'edgier' strategy, or will McDonald's simply return to its conventional roots?

(Deleted by moderator) This is the most condescending crock-of-shite I've seen in a very long time. McDonalds still sell the same crap product. Why didn't they show some crack-head coming in looking to get something of the dollar/euro menu?

"Come as you are" .... BOLLOCKS

McDonalds understands gay teenagers need burgers too.

Are we not in the second decade of the 21st century or have I been watching too many episodes of Ashes to Ashes?

*applauds Youssef*

Stupid ad for a stupid company.

They sell second-rate fast food, over-priced garbage that people too stupid or too desperate eat when in a hurry; I really don't get this whole image re-branding thing.

Stay true to your actual target audience, because people with brains, morals and taste will never become regular purchasers of your product, simple as.

Because of the above reasons I actually find it offensive that McDonalds would attempt anything like this; ironically I find it so cheap and out-of-place it puts me off my food; however as it's McDonalds maybe that isn't ironic ...

@ Youssef Sarhan,

If you ever been in a McDonald's in the wee morning hours of Monday, where you see all sorts of colourful characters who have clearly been up all night, and see how McDonald's staff act non-chalantly towards those customers, you would appreciate their "come as you are" end line.

The first time I looked at McDonald's gay-themed ad, I loved it, no holds barred.

Wow, the 'Gay McDonald's Ad' really messed with my emotions in a very short period of time. It began by being twee like a disney movie, then I felt bad for the dad as he put his foot in his mouth without knowing. Then I felt like screaming "tell him now, it's the perfect moment". Then I just felt sorry for the boy as he realised he could never tell his dad. Then there was a weird smirk and scoff finale which made me dislike the boy.

I see where they are trying to go but in the end, a safe ad is a safe ad...so expect 'safe results'.

Im not by any means a fan of Mcdonald's, that said. I do find it fascinating in fast food joints seeing the variety of people, hot girls, business men, families with screaming kids, trendy types. Everyone wants junk sometimes, in that regard the ad works well.

@Reality Check

I've been in McDonalds all over world. In Amsterdam, where transsexual prostitutes get their morning waffles, to the Mexico-California border where illegal immigrants and border police stuff their face with a dose of real American cuisine. My beef isn't with the social issue of homosexuality, it's just that mcdonalds are trying to deal with morals and ethics; who the f**k do they think they are? Oh and yeah, that pun was certainly intended.

‘Come as you are’ – wonder what Kurt Cobain would have to say about that one . . .

The gay son approach is simply an attempt to be socially relevant, but ends up being condescending and frankly makes the brand appear old world. It's Ok to be gay, we at McDonald's don't mind. Did that need to be said?

The other executions are bland and highly contrived. People chatting online pretending to be something they're not? Come on! How is that even slightly original?

And the mum, who simply comes across as a bitch. What are they trying to say with this one? If you're a lousy, stressed mum or a cheeky fucker of a kid you can still eat at McDonald's? Talk back to me in public will you? Wait till I get you home!

The come as you are (Kurt must be going crazy in purgatory as we speak) platform is an interesting one, but I don't think the creative approach does the strategy justice.

Plus, didn't Burger King have a go at this positioning a while ago? Well, kind of http://25.media.tumblr.com/b9vfl4b63qatb70tSzOam4vMo1_500.jpg

who thought this would be a good idea? nobody cares if a bloke eating in mcds is gay straight or both. not being "gay friendly" is the last thing mcdonalds need to worry about, if there was anything they could have done to make me want to eat there less, it would be this.

I honestly see no reason why this advert should cause a stir, other than the concept being a bit weak.

I seen this a while back on another blog. I couldnt careless if a guy in an advert is gay, straight or bi. I would have thought people only went to McDonalds to eat burgers and bad processed food, not to come out to their parents. This gay advert is just kind of sad in a way, at least the Granny and Grandad internet chat has some humour in it.

YAWN, this thing has been done to death, sooooo many times.
CR, Why do we have to discuss/crtitique Maccy D's every so often? They are a despicable, mind dumbing, litter polluting, unenvironmental, culture bending, child exploiting pimple on the face of our culture. I want to take no part in their development please. Go away for ever and die McDonalds.

Heh, I don't really care about the advertising or any of that nonsense, I've never been to Mcd and never will... But that boy is cute! The only reason I like the advert. Nom nom.

I'd expect nothing less than McDonalds understanding that everyone is accepted.

Why ram the point home? "GAY PEOPLE NOW ALLOWED IN"

Their 'Just Passing By' ads were stand-out. And said such a point without making it SO OBVIOUS: http://www.youtube.com/grahamcreative#p/a/9C2ED389B844F0BC/2/B45oq8ns37E

Sorry for the caps. But it's what McDonalds ARE DOING.

This is a new world order where kids actually enter puberty at horrifyingly low ages, shrinking childhood and blending it with adolescence, which is due to Mcdonalds hormones in mass-produced meat!

Whatever is the reason that has made McD released the ad, the perspectives in the US and Europe are very different. McD has become a real American symbol, and whereas in the US this ad could be seen as a big step (in case it was displayed there) in Europe seems more like a ridiculous one as Europe is used to much more straight-forward gay-themed ads.
