iGlass mate? That'll be extra

Initially, we were a tad sceptical about the usability of the iPad. Then we saw Apple's first ad for it and realised that you simply need to place a sheet of glass in between your lap and the device. Easy...

Leaving aside the strangely perfect hand models, the ludicrously fast screen loading times, the ad lacks a basic appreciation of the laws of physics. Watch as the iPad is spun, seemingly without wobble (though there's a teeny-tiny one at 0.15); gaze as our Apple user types freely onto the device, causing it to move not one inch. Marvel at how you seemingly can use it on your lap with gay abandon, at no risk to your parquet floor.

OK I jest, but in illustrating how apparently easy it is to hold, move, and just plain sit down with your iPad, hasn't Apple drawn attention to the very aspect of its design that has come in for the most criticism?

Apple's first TV spot for the iPad aired during coverage the Oscars last night. You can also watch the ad, here, on apple.com.

Looks like a composition to me.

A nice big thick moulded intuitive multi tasking bouncy bullet proof rubbery holder should make the iPad easy to use. And once voice activated, no problems... Can always ask a good friend to hold it!

It's an ad. Deal with it.

Are you seriously suggesting you'd prefer the app to be a clumsy, ham fisted voyeur show as you look over someone's should while they man handle the thing?

Apple have made a conscious decision to have a 'background' in the these apps (remember that the iPhone and iPod touch are all on white background) in order to demonstrate this as a device for home users.

Of course it is slightly contrived, but since when did adverts ever depict reality?

Apart for the drumming gorilla of course.

i don't think there's anything wrong with the ad, we are not focusing on the problem here. The problem is the device itself, at the end of the day, its an over-sized ipod touch. Surely id rather stick to my iphone.

Stick to your iPhone then. Jeez.

Maybe we should all wait until we've actually TRIED THE DAMN THING OURSELVES before casting judgement on its usability?

I'll tell you what I think!

I think there are far more important things to be worried about than how difficult it will be to use an iPad while resting it on your lap!

Yeah more things to worry about - such as.... people screaming at each other - " Hey!....you just sat on and bent my iPad!!!"

to all those complaining about this article, its you guys who need to get over it, you know what the article was about before you clicked it! whay waste your time clicking it if all your gonna do is whine about this blog post, this happens to be an extremely valid subject.

apple usually nail everything they do, the tablet is no genius idea and it never will be, this thing will only be successful due to the content.

ergonomically, its an absolute job, absolutely terrible to hold, extremely bad for your back etc... its ridiculous.. so i guess we'll all wait for companies like belkin to save the day for apple and bring out beautiful stands to hold the dam thing on your lap, then maybe a strap that goes around your legs to stabilise the slippery surface. i say stick to your 15" laptops and iphones, what a joke that in the keynote, they put the laptops, iphones and macs side by side and "just realised there was a space for another product"

the only reason this product came out was that the rumors of this thing over the last decade just got more and more hyped, it got talked about so much we all think we want/need one.

i say dont buy one, lets bring apple's ego down and make this a failure! sinical, yes, but we are being used people!

The simple fact of the matter is that if you like the product, are a fan of mac products in general, like the idea of a tablet sized device then you'll buy one. If you're not, then you won't. The mac bashing and whining about the device is a pointless waste of everybody's time. Let's try calming down. There ARE more important things to worry about than a new mac product for goodness sake. I never heard all this whinging over the Kindle... : )

You are going to struggle to criticise an advert for not portraying realism. At the end of the day Apple created this based on years of hype and if anyone was going to make the tablet succeed it would be them, whether they should is another matter.

I want a big oversized iPod touch. Or more precisely my family do. To have fun with.

Oh, and in a fast paced ad, showing screen content, you HAVE to artificially keep the screen stable or the ad would be impossible to follow at all.

I will fire my bb gun at every iPad I see, especially if its in my local pub. Sniper style, ofcourse. If I run out of plastic pellets, I will just throw the bb gun at the iPad, bollywood style.

CGI there for the ersatz screens. Whatever mockup stood in for the device was likely attached to a fixed arm with a rotating joint, neatly hidden by the camera angle.

Has anyone heard any reports of being able to use one to design on? Might come in nicely for presenting work to clients, what's your thoughts? Matt.
