Driven by data: McLaren's new site

Maybe it's the ungainly shadow cast by Jeremy Clarkson but the world of motorsport wouldn't be the first place we would look for stylish graphic design. A new site for F1 team McLaren Mercedes proves us wrong

The site was created by Work Club and Pirata. According to Work-Club's Andy Sandoz, the idea is that the site is "designed as if a computer compiled it, with the pit lane race screens in mind. You see what they see."

So, during today's practice for the Bahrain Grand Prix, the first race in the new F1 season, live data was streamed to the site providing the running dialogue between drivers Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button and the team

Elsewhere, the site carries through the style to pages on the team's drivers

During the race itself on Sunday, the site will carry more live stats and commentary giving users some idea of the race experience. Mclaren.com

I do like the style of the main pages for the site and I see what they mean by the monitors appearance. I think it is a great idea to have this facility incorporated within the site. Overall I think the designers have done a good job.

Apart from that slightly annoying drop down for the hidden menu bar, I think this is a great idea. A nice use of on the go information, which makes for a nice read even after the event.

The design is terrible, but good work to the guys doing the data

Brilliant combination of technology and graphic appropriation, albeit not a 100% well designed site. Typography could be tweaked to be a little to help make the overall look and feel better. But it's a good consumer-engaging idea.

F1 is cool. so is the car. But it is a risk in my mind.

I'm a fan of the hiding navigation menu, seems to be taking the approach of most video players where the play bar and controls fade out if the users cursor is not on the video area. Gives a clean look to the top of the site. Also, the commentary is fairly simple to read, it's probably because there are only three parties (Button, Hamilton and the pits), if there were many more then it could get messy.

Been a designer whose passionate about F1 I was more than pleasantly surprised by this site. Before the race I thought it felt a bit odd, but then I washed away any design criticisms and decided it was brilliant to have this live content. Edited, sure, but live and immediate (although delayed by one lap).

A remarkable feat!

McLaren have always been good at design, part of the ethic of attention to detail that Ron Dennis brought to the company I think. However I don't think this is a very beautiful example!
