Finnish artist Klaus Haapaniemi has just completed the new covers for Patrick Süskind's two classic novels from the 1980s, Perfume and The Pigeon...

London-based Haapaniemi graduated from Lahti Design Institute in Finland and has since worked as a designer at Diesel and the Diesel Stylelab.

Now signed to Big Active as an illustrator, he has also published his own books, ceramics and even wall tapestries.

The final cover

In a new project for Penguin, Haapaniemi has helped to repackage German writer Patrick Süskind's two novels from the 1980s. Perfume is undoubtedly the better known of the two (having shifted millions of copies and been turned in to a film in 2006) but many fans of the notoriously secretive writer prefer the more spookily existential tale about a security guard's encounter with a lone pigeon.

Both books were designed by Yeti McCaldin at Penguin and are set to be published in April. More work by Haapaniemi can be seen at his Big Active page. His own site, klaush.com, looks set to launch soon.

The cover pics are exsquisite. Shame the Observer quotes are so mediocre.

Lovely work. By the way CR, you referred to the author as 'Peter' ("Haapaniemi has helped to repackage German writer Peter Süskind's two novels from the 1980s").

Love the slightly and intentionally imperfect symmetry in this work. Great attention to details. That's a whole lotta gradient meshing going on! Impressed.

I like seeing the preliminary work. It's inspiring to see how other illustrators alter ideas as they go along.
I like the designs, however I'm not sure the Perfume cover totally represents the feel you get when you read the book.

Really like these covers, they are different to what I thought they might look like. Very illustrative and bold,
nice use of typography. Keep posting things like this, love it!

What happened to the Penguin competition to design the Perfume book jacket?? The closing date for submissions is the 23rd April 2010. Bit strange of them to release a new cover just before the deadline no?
