Manchester-based Dorothy has created a striking poster to promote Tate Liverpool's current exhibition, Picasso: Peace and Freedom, which runs until August 30...
The exhibition is the first to focus on the post-war period of the famous artist's work in depth – a period in which Picasso was a member of the French Communist Party.

The poster features a bespoke font designed specially for the exhibition – inspired, Dorothy tells us, "by the posters designed and distributed by striking workers and students in the Paris uprising of May '68." The font, entitled Picasso '68 is being used across all exhibition branding, advertising and a range of merchandise including the poster shown above - which has been produced as a limited edition screenprint which is for sale exclusively in the Tate shop.

Love the fact that the condensed weight is called 'suppressed'.
Lovely work all round, I reckon!

I am not overly convinced by the connection between the Parisian student uprising of '68 and Picasso's artworks throughout post war French communism, but I like the typeface very much.

'Striking Poster' ? I hate negative comments, but seriously what is striking about this? The font is interesting, but this is far from striking. Plus the headline is basically a pun. Sorry, not overly impressed.

Seems familiar:

Have to agree with Matt i'm afraid. Just saying something is striking doesn't make it so!
If it was that easy we would all 'self declare' every piece of work we do - 'AWARD WORTHY', 'STUNNINGLY BEAUTIFUL' etc. and have it displayed for every art lovin' critic to diss!
Having said all that, hope the Tate sell loads and Dorothy makes a mint.

name-dropping + let's make a new/old font = Branding. Same old.
Quelle est difference?

Same here - a little disappointed in the poster, it doesn't do justice, to what is a great exhibition. Also, a bit of a shame the Tate couldn't find a Liverpool based agency for the commission.

I might be reading into this too much or simply stating the obvious, but does anyone else see the link between Lennon's famous lyric (along with the Liverpool tie-in) to the Peace & Freedom tagline?

Nice font, weak unoriginal poster

I agree with Liverpool Photographer re Tate's choice of mancunian agency.
Great piece of typography/branding none the less. Well done Dot yer slag.

Manchester based agency for Liverpool Tate - please, no decent Liverpool agencies then.
As to the poster - it's too obvious - the typeface looks like something you would get free off a CD and the Give Picasso a Chance wording is student level. Don't get the student uprising in 68 connection either. So in conclusion, a crap poster, sorry.

I think perhaps I'm missing the point, but I also don't think there is much which is 'striking' about this poster. If I have missed the point, then I apologise. I feel a little bit like these kinds of posters have been over-done, especially with the 'Keep Calm & Carry On' ones. I think its time for something a little more detailed.
