Pantone, the company that sets the world's standards on colour, has relaunched its Pantone Matching System as The Plus Series. As part of the launch of The Plus Series, the company has released this mini documentary giving an insight into the way it works...

Base Design in New York has designed the new identity, packaging and promotional series for The Plus Series (images from the website showing elements of this are below), and also encouraged the name change. According to Base's press info, the name was chosen in order "to emphasise the added benefits of the upgraded product line – 566 new colours, a revised chromatic colour flow, and a set of digital tools".

Base also produced the film, which features contributions from John Maeda and Doug Jaeger amongst others, in conjunction with director Greg Mitnick and Cool Hunting producer Ami Kealoha. While a touch corporate, the film takes viewers behind the scenes at the company, and shows the making of some of those lovely colours.

It's about time Pantone got their act together, they've rested on their laurels for far too long.
It's been 20 years since the last decent update (Metallic book).

Extremely crap video though.

Isn't this about Pantone selling more chip books?

I have two purple pantone mugs and the irony is they don't match. At all. Imagine if I invested in a third mug...

@Carrie.
They are all based on the same colour. The reason why they look different is that little changes of heat in the ceramic burn oven makes the colours react differently and the result is different shades of the same colour. In your case I would get a red marker cross out the pantone code and write the "real" one (that you've check with a patone fan) on top of it.

It's high time Pantone reorganized the page numbering and order of colors to make colors easier and more logical to find, so this is a welcome development. It had become a nightmare with all of the add-on colors stuck in the fan everywhere.

But how does this new Plus system integrate with Pantone's still-relatively-new GOE system? Seems like this move is a surefire way to further confuse the marketplace, which already can't figure out whether they should stick with PMS or migrate to GOE. Pantone should friggiin' make up its marketing mind! Did GOE die a premature death or something?

The new guides are trash. The paper is too thin allowing colour contamination through paper. The colours differ from previous books and even from each other. I have two dispensing systems with over 500 colours in each that are now useless as the databases are matched to previous colour guide. None of my printers can find what they are looking for now with all the colours scattered throughout the book.

How are you suppose to find a certain color in the "Plus" book ????
I have to go on- line to the "Pantone finder to find the page number.
This book my be better for designers but STINKS for BUSY printers !!
Maybe Pantone should have two different "Plus" series books. One for designers and another with ascending numbers for printers. And I also think the stock is too thin

Very frustrating!!!
