Noted on kottke.org, The Big Caption is an irreverent companion to The Boston Globe's Big Picture website. Essentially, it takes some often fairly serious news photography and slaps some comedic type right over the top...

Seemingly the brainchild of one Ian Collins, The Big Caption is updated sporadically with an array of stories and an equally wide range of fontage. Here are some recent posts, with the ongoing blog at thebigcaption.com.

nice idea but too few are hits - too many are misses - both on comedy and design.

Agreed.

A good concept has to have a payoff in direct proportion to the time invested in creating it. This leaves me thinking that perhaps someone has too much time on their hands.

I Agree with MAN. Which makes me sound like Tarzan, but hey.

We used to have a newspaper account (still do, but they have zero budget) and a favourite game of ours was to browse their photo library and come up with captions for amazing local press photos. To get an idea of the kind of thing, visit this:

Funnier than the big caption

I laughed, but not as hard as I should.
Smells a bit like b3ta.com, which ain't bad, just not for an establishment such as CR :)

I agree, it is patchy but there are a couple which made me laugh - particularly the last one. Actually I thought the design was well integated, with each typeface & colouring used matching the humorous take on the picture.
