Impressive Print: a letterpress project

Posted by Gavin Lucas, 8 November 2010, 9:52    Permalink    Comments (17)

Glasgow Press worked with local graphic designer Kerr Vernon to produce a promotional pack of music-themed cards which showcase letterpress printing in all its tactile glory...

The project, entitled Impressive Print, comprises a letterpress printed cassette-size card box - as above, and indeed, below...

Open it up...

...and the inside of the box has a rathe nice foilblocked cassette graphic on it.

To find it though, you'll have to remove the concertina-folded card housing that contains the six music-themed cards...

The pack and its contents has been printed on GF Smith Colorplan stock and features six different types of duplex board and a range of printing techniques including die cutting and metallic and holo-graphic foiling. Each of the cards relates to a particular track by a particular artist - see if you can guess them – spoiler alert: you can read the track / artist info on the backs of some of the cards in the following photo!

As this is a promotional give-away created to promote the work of Glasgow Press, if you would like to be sent one, get in touch with Dan on info@glasgowpress.com. To find out more about Glasgow Press and the kind of printing they do, visit glasgowpress.com

Lovely post, thanks. An imaginative combination of copy and design. Who says that print is dead?

Some nice work – it's just a shame it's been associated with an antiquated technology – surely the whole point is that letterpress is still relevant today and not consigned to the past as the cassette tape has been.

Very nice, like the fact that the illustrative styles are quite different but it all still hangs together really well, good work Kerr

Very cool work, but not really "letterpress".

Well, unless the meaning of the word continues to erode, in which case die cutting, foil-stamping, and ostensibly other "trade operations" in addition to printing from plastic plates are taking on the mantle of Letterpress with capital l.

With all due respect to the creative team, and the press operators/finishers, letterpress is done from letters, and specifically, hot metal types. Everything else is simply relief printing with varying degrees of *wow* attached.

Great work, you can't beat letterpress. I've recently had our business cards letterpress printed and it gives such a different dimension to the design. It makes any print work much more tactile and interesting.
