New Stella ad, shot by Wes Anderson and Roman Coppola

No longer "reassuringly expensive", Stella Artois should, these days, always be supped from a special chalice shaped glass. The beer brand also has a spanky new TV and cinema ad, courtesy of ad agency Mother and a directorial collaboration between Wes Anderson of Moxie Pictures and Roman Coppola of The Director's Bureau...
The spot, entitled Apartomatic, features a gadget loving guy who brings a girl back to his gadget-tastic apartment. As he slips into something more comfortable, his date explores the a switchboard on the table infront of her. Tables, walls and sofas revolve as hidden gadgets start er, gadgeting.
By the time our young hero emerges from his walk-in wardrobe, the sofa has swallowed the girl, but his Stella-pouring gadget has poured a single chalice full of lager. Rather than wondering where his date has disappeared to, her muffled calls from within the revolving sofa instead give him the impression his fresh pint of Stella is calling out to him. "Mon amour," he whispers as he strides forth with a grin and a twinkle in his eye.
Cut to a product shot of the chalice of Stella and (as far as we know) a brand new strapline for the brand: "she is a thing of beauty."
Apartomatic has aired in the US already and is due to hit UK TV and cinema screens any day now.
Amazing what you can find on YouTube...

I think I know wher they go the idea. I made proper music for this:

Stella Artois’ music is too much on the swing for the young couple, I wish they would have asked me.

A great spot, no doubt, but I can't help thinking that Stella is presenting itself as awfully French for a Belgian beer.

Very cool ad.
That strapline actually made its first appearance a few months ago:

A visually very pleasing ad and nod to Wes Anderson
However. It may have been reassuringly expensive and now quirky/retro chic, but the illusion will be lost come Friday night 11.01pm in the the local J D Weatherspoon. When the far from sexually charismatic and retrosexual types, force their 8th pint down... Forgive the stereotyping, but it is quicker.
Is Stella kidding its self?

Lots of fun.

Its not bloody french! At least the previous agency never overly pretended it was. Retro Rubbish. All style no substance. Get an idea.

Shame it tastes like a liquid aluminum cleaning solvent.

I thought this beer was more usually called "wife beater", because of it's obvious and ubiquitous Anglo Saxon appropriation. Am I missing something, or don't the suits at Stella Artois dare to check market research? Maybe they don't do any market research.

@ sebastian
I agree the music isn't quite right....I would have thought Wes Anderson would have selected something more quirky. I prefer your clip on youtube, what similarity!

Trying too hard

Another example of an idea which simply isn’t funny when made, compared to when its an idea in the brainstorm session. I didn’t realise the muffled voice was mistaken for the lager, until reading the explanation of the ad afterwards. Sometimes, comedy in adverts just doesn’t work. This is one of them. Getting big name directors to do this sort of thing - my they must be laughing all the way to the bank! Does your average Stella drinker actually know what a Wes Anderson film is? Reassuringly expensive.

'Down with Love' redone in a commercial. So where does creativity start?

The guy is also wearing a Super Sporstman leather jacket by Lewis Leathers -another very stylish addition to a great commercial!

does it really still take misogyny to sell beer?

I love beer adverts, they are generally the best on TV, and I thought the last Stella ad was great (the one with the piano). This one doesn't work for me it isn't funny, I don't think it is particularly stylish or cool and I don't have a any urge to buy Stella Artois.

rather 'flimsily overimaginative'... whats with the retro gadget setting its 'annoyingly repulsive' trying too hard indeed, not so amusing nor persuasive.
