Cardinal Sinister: A new (unofficial) portrait of the Pope

With various tensions rising with regard to Pope Benedict XVI's arrival in London this week, this rather sinister stencil portrait of the Pope stroking a fluffy white cat (a la Blofeld from James Bond movies) appeared opposite the Royal Albert Hall in the early hours this morning...

The image, entitled Cardinal Sinister was created by artist Nick Walker who, as well as alligning himself with the views of those planning to Protest The Pope in a march and rally due to take place on Saturday, has a solo show coming up in London's Art Sensus gallery – the PR of which will no doubt be helped by any controversy this new Pope portrait may stir up.

Walker's gallery show, In Gods We Trust will run from October 13 to November 27 at Art Sensus (formerly Orel Art), 7 Howick Place, London SW1P 1BB

I'm sure the Pope won't understand the cross-reference... I wish he would!!

This painting will provoke more people to question The Pope's visit than a thousand protest leaflets could ever do. It crosses all language barriers to deliver the message. Absolutely brilliant!

Shame, if it wasn't for fact every living, breathing BBC person was out covering his visit this might have made a few people smile at 6 o'clock!!

Do people really not know their own minds? Why do you all put up with this propaganda?

I'm positive we saw him doing another one at 5:30pm yesterday in front of a crowd of about eight, on Curtain Road? Can anyone confirm? Or was everyone doing pope stencils yesterday?

It is a realistic take on the Pope. The reference to stroking a cat is a bit lost on me... I don't understand why a cat. Perhaps, it is to show his love for all of God's creatures. It's also quite unusual to see him sitting down. The artwork suggest the Pope at a time of relaxation... far from the maddening crowd of modern day aetheists that great him in the UK. Overall - Better than a Banksy!

@ Carmen

Blofeld? Dr. Evil? Dr. Claw from Inspector Gadget?

Just shows the Brits need the guidance of the Holy Father to turn back toward God and away from secular humanism and moral relativity. As far as the artwork, looks a bit hacked together from low res pics online.

when did CR start getting so political and insensitive to peoples religious practice? This is a leader of one of the biggest groups of christians in the world, give the pope and the catholics a break, love thy neighbour, peace!

I'd put this pope in a wheelie bin and keep the cat.

Wowee! A mediocre, ersatz-Banksy stencil on the wall outside the Royal College of Art. Sweet cheeses, this is a total yawn. I'm sure old Popey is sweating in his robes over this...
