If you know your Jacobsen from your Panton, you might get a kick out of this new iPhone app which turns recognising classic furniture into a game.
Design Icon: Chairs works by showing silhouettes of design icons and then asking the user for their name, designer or date. It was developed by Mark Stevens from Fail Forwards in Copenhagen and costs 59p from the App Store (see more details here).

"Whether you’re a design aficionado, student, or want to score a bargain at a bric-a-brac market, the Design Icon series gets you up to speed on the design classics," Stevens says. "The world’s most iconic chairs are featured. The majority are classics of the 20th Century, though a few famous 19th and 21st century pieces are included. Currently there are more than 100 chairs featured."

A font version of the app is promised soon.

"More than 100" chairs?? Wow, that's probably about .001% of the chairs that were designed in the last century. I think this app is an embarrassment to anyone actually interested in history or design, and unfortunately promotes the "Jeopardy" mentality that likely originated from similar self-serving interests.

Hi Sujay
I designed the app. I'd like to respond if I may. Yes it's not every chair in the world. We went with the chairs that were commonly featured in museum collections and highlighted in books. And you can always argue which ones should be included. We'll add more chairs continually in the updates. Happy to hear your suggestions.
And yes it is obviously only an introduction to the subject. Still we've had some nice feedback, including from people with a professional interest in design history. We'll be able to go in more depth in the iPad version. As you know, these chairs often have a fascinating history behind them.
Anyway thanks for your interest.

Chill out Sujay, it's only a game. Plus it's only 59p. If you're that bothered go spend £20+ on a book about chairs.
I think this looks ace, well done Mark.
