eBay's box with a message

eBay has launched a re-usable shipping box with space inside for sellers to leave messages for their shipment's recipient

The online trading network must be responsible for a significant proportion of the world's Jiffy Bag and parcel tape sales, so it makes sense for it to get involved in finding a greener alternative, particularly if that alternative is also a marketing vehicle for the brand.

Inside the box, which was designed by San Francisco studio Office, white spaces are left for shippers to write messages to recipients. As the box is re-used, these spaces will tell the story of its various journeys. There are also printed tips on ways to re-use materials such as old phone books for packing and the boxes are designed to minimise the use of tape.

The idea for the box came out of eBay's Innovation Expo, which it holds each spring as a forum for employees to develop prototypes for new products and 'breakthrough innovations'.

The box, which is made from recycled, FSC-approved cardboard, was launched at the company's On Location event in San Jose last week. The company will manufacture 100,000 in three sizes as a pilot programme. To get hold of the boxes, users must sign up with the eBay Green Team here.

Lovely idea.

Let's hope they don't get into the hands of the "non-payers" and "faulty goods sellers".

This is spot on!

It answers a real need, but with a little extra thought it also enhances the feeling of being part of a community. Something I'm not sure Ebay have really understood the importance of in the past.

Well done whoever worked on that one, I take my virtual hat off to you.

Such a great idea and I really like the design. This is something that has been needed for a while and can't wait till they are rolled out. I might have to sign up or buy something off ebay just to get one.

Its a beautiful idea - I want one too. A bit like retail geocaching. I hope the idea will be taken up by other organisations.

Ebay was smart to launch this eco-packaging pilot program right after the NYtimes ran an article about people's frustration with excess packaging. http://www.nytimes.com/2010/09/08/technology/08packaging.html

Hopefully, ideas like this will put an end to "wrap rage."

Well done Office + Ebay.

Whilst I like the design(especially the message history), no one seems to have questioned the green aspect of things. From the things I buy online, I get more than enough boxes through the post already that can be reused(most of these end up in the recycling). Is this really an issue for the majority of people who sell things every now and again?

It reminds me of the fabric bags that came out a few years back that we designers loved as they were perfect for all sorts of messages. The idea was people would reuse the fabric bags instead of using ordinary plastic supermarket carrier bags. The problem comes when the amount of fabric bags being made are more than there are people to use them ie when there's about 20 bags to every person in the uk + they take more energy to produce.

Its nice that ebay are thinking of new ideas, but is this not just adding 100,000+ more boxes(colour printed) into the world that most people could do without. If you are in desperate need of a box, you can just go to your local post office...

Its good to see such large brands as eBay starting to set some new standards. Unfortunately, it seems to be the way of the world where only the big players receive the recognition. There could have been smaller companies doing something similar that we don't know about....it all works in favour of eBay - eco-packaging = point to eBay. In saying that, if other businesses copy, in this case, it can only be a good thing.
